The Tenets and Codes are used in each class to reinforce proper training, to build camaraderie, and to instill a sense of responsibility outside of the dojang (training hall). The Class Tenets are recited at the beginning of each class, to reinforce these thoughts during training. By the same token, the Life Codes are recited as a group at the end of class, to provide guidance when our students are not in the dojang.
Grandmaster J. J. Kim started his training in Tang Soo Do in 1945 under the guidance of Grandmaster Hwang Kee. In 1947 Grandmaster J. J. Kim earned his black belt, Dan #38 and in 1952, he assisted in the formation of the Korean Tang Soo Do Association in Korea. From 1955 - 1959, he was a top master instructor.
We teach a Korean style called Tang Soo Do. It is similar to Tae Kwon Do, but does not emphasize tournament sparring/competition. Tang Soo Do is an empty handed martial art that focuses on the betterment of the self, rather than the competition with others. We teach self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-control.
