Youth and Family Counseling Services began in 1918 as the Mission of Help, an Episcopalian agency serving the poor and needy. In 1921, it became Youth Consultation Service, concentrating solely on counseling and becoming family oriented. Then in 1961, after many years of existing as a part - time agency with rented offices in different towns, the agency severed its ties with the church, became private, non - profit and non - sectarian and changed its name to Youth and Family Counseling Service.
It became a member of several United Ways and initially limited its services to residents of Berkeley Heights, Clark, Cranford, Garwood, Mountainside, Rahway, Scotch Plains and Westfield in Union County, NJ so it could more fully meet the needs of those residents.

Services
We are proud to offer FREE individual, couples, family and group counseling for anyone who has served or is currently serving in the military. We know that waiting lists and financial issues are often barriers to treatment for veterans that are vulnerable to mental illness and substance abuse, and we are happy to provide our Bravest First program free of charge to the individuals and families that have served our country.
Please Contribute to our cause to improve the lives of those suffering from mental illness and the stigma that it has inherited. The program is called "AmazonSmile, " and it is the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same services. It is their way of supporting charitable organizations around the world and we are glad to participate in this exciting program!

Outside of the location, there are few other upsides. Cold office staff and the practice is very unforgiving of cancellations. I was given a hard time cancelling 8 days in advance in one instance, then was blamed for cancelling when the therapist miswrote our appt date on her calendar in another instance (our actual scheduled appointment was one week later). After a 1.5 year run at this practice, I won't be going back again. Look elsewhere, save yourself the aggravation.

Lisa DeVries is the sweetest woman I have ever met in my life. She is professional, caring, a great listener and will work with your schedule in times of need. She is truly passionate about helping others and does so in the most genuine way possible. All the staff I've come across here are professional and very welcoming the moment a patient walks in. I don't remember a time where I left a session without feeling a sense of relief. There is no better practice in the state of New Jersey as this one in Westfield. If you are looking for a staff of professionals that genuinely care then this is the
