In 1997, I realized that there was a tremendous need to develop child-friendly and effective techniques for children with behavioral and academic issues. Since then I have devoted myself exclusively to developing such methods because these children often resist conventional therapies. Having taught thousands of other professionals on how best to reach these clients, I continue my mission to serve these clients and their families.

Many parents and professionals assume individual therapy is superior to group therapy because it focuses exclusively on one client. Children are most familiar and comfortable learning in groups such as school, sports, scouts, etc. Group therapy provides support and the opportunity to learn from others' experiences.
Adolescents are often highly resistant to therapy. That is why I have developed fun "teen-friendly" techniques that utilize humor and entertainment to reach even the most apathetic client. Seeing an adolescent turn around and work productively in school and avoid negative peers is what makes my job "the best one I could ever have!"
Nothing is more heart wrenching than a sad and self-critical child. Children diagnosed with mood disorders often have undiagnosed underlying skill deficits that make them feel helpless and hopeless. Empowering them with skills and optimism is one of the most gratifying aspects of my work. Dr. Sussman is a skilled and knowledgeable children anxiety attacks psychologist and academic achievement psychologist.
I received a Ph. D in clinical psychology in 1979 from an American Psychological Association (APA) approved program (the gold standard). My internship was in a NY State Children's Psychiatric Facility (also APA approved). In addition to my private practice in New Jersey and New York, I have worked and consulted for various child care agencies.
Children and Adolescents with disruptive behaviors, learning problems, and social issues are overwhelmed due to society's pressure for them to behave and learn like everyone else. These children think and perform differently than their peers. They need an ally who understands their challenges and strives to find innovative strategies to excite and motivate them to succeed.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Steve Sussman. When we started there my son was dealing with so many challenges and having so much trouble with school, as parents we were feeling quite defeated. We had tried individual therapy but to no avail. From the minute we walked into Dr. Steve’s office I knew things would be different. And they were! Dr. Steve’s game show atmosphere really sets a wonderful and positive tone for the kids. Through a positive reinforcement approach mixed with some great jokes and a wonderful sense of humor Dr. Steve truly connects not only with the children

Dr Steve approach towards behavioral therapy is a refreshing change in the era were everything is anyways unnecessarily complicated. He meets the kids where they belong - in the space of fun, games, rewards and living the present. The session is like a game show where parents and kids get to rate their week gone by, it may take a couple of weeks to get a hang of it, but in just few weeks my 9 yr old son was able to recognize which behavior will fetch him low scores for him and genuinely tried to correct them. A group therapy also help the kids (and parents) recognize that they are not the only

My Child has been seeing Dr. Sussman for a few months now he loves him. His methods and how he reaches the kids are different and they work. The kids learn from each others mistakes as well as from Dr. Sussman. I would recommend you take your child to him no matter how complex your child may be Dr. Sussmans is awesome!

The program is setup as a group therapy session where kids sit at a table and talk in a game show like atmosphere where rewards are given for good behavior. At first I was open to the format however I found some of the jokes Dr Sussman made were offense and unnecessary. There were times I felt he was even mean to some of the kids. There was a constant rotation of parents which should have alerted me but when your a parent seeking help you make sure you give your best effort.
I rarely write reviews but as a parent looking for the best option I understand what it is like to search for a safe place

We can’t say enough positive things about Dr Steve and how great it hs been for us and our son since starting these sessions. Children are encouraged to participate during session almost like a game show with prizes for improved behavior, many jokes and a chance for kids to hear how others are coping with related issues based on parent feedback each week. Our son is going for sessions for almost a year now and has made incredible progress in his behavior on multiple fronts, and we would thoroughly recommend Dr Steve’s approach as a unique alternative to other forms of counseling.

After a particularly rough Junior year in HS, My son, who is mildly autistic and has ADHD, fell into a funk that we could not get him out of, with behavior that was disrupting his work and school life. After trying other courses of action, we were referred to Dr Steven Sussman by a former school psychologist.
Dr. Sussman is upfront in explaining that his methods are not traditional therapy. The therapy is interactive, and game show like, with some good-natured ribbing/teasing that is a throwback to a time where everyone actually talked with each other.

Dr. Steven Sussman has been a great inspiration to my son (12 years old). He runs his sessions like a game show, which makes it enjoyable and comfortable for the children. The jokes that he tells help the children loosen up so that they can freely discuss their challenges. My son states in his own words, “It’s good to hear that I’m not the only kid with challenges.” The children are so friendly that my son has made a few friends. My son has made significant improvements. Thanks, Dr. Sussman

Dr. Sussman is not only one of the most down to earth child psychologists out there, but he knows how to keep the session going. The doctor has such a great demeanor and a sense of humor I have not seen ever. It's because of this that I recommend you bringing your child to him for a session. I promise you will never regret it.

I am a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and trainer of professionals throughout the U.S. and other countries. My great interest is treatment that is quick and effective. Dr. Steven Sussman has developed a truly innovative, quick effective system for turning defiant children into cooperative ones. Since it doesn't involve probing deeply into people's personal lives while injecting humor, there is little resistance. I have referred many clients to him over the years, with great results.
