Waves of grief can overcome us in an instant-like a tsunami out of nowhere. Those grief tsunamis are often triggered by something we see, smell, hear, taste or touch. We can get overwhelmed in the grocery store when we reach for our loved one's favorite sauce, only to be struck by the realization that they are no longer with us.
Trauma results from many types of disturbances. Trauma can originate from a single event or from multiple experiences. An event becomes traumatic when the experience is highly distressing and overwhelming. During the event you may have feelings of helplessness, powerless or feeling trapped. Often you're left feeling unsafe and frightened and remain on-guard even after the event has passed.
Close your eyes and imagine a calm place. This can be a place you have been or one you create that feels safe and peaceful. Pay attention to the sensations. What does this place look like? Notice the colors, sounds, and any smells in the air. What can you feel? Notice the temperature and how the air moves around you.
We've been helping people for more than 30 years and we've seen any number of types of therapy come and go. So when we get excited about a type of therapy, that says a lot! EMDR is just that-exciting, effective and fast. This isn't just us saying that, There is plenty of research showing time and time again that EMDR gets positive results significantly sooner than traditional talk therapies.
Reaching for your partner's favorite BBQ sauce on aisle 5 at the grocery store.only to realize they are not there anymore. It can be helpful to have someone to talk to about your emotions. Someone who is trained in how to help you through the pains of grief. Someone who YOU don't have to take care of or worry about hurting their feelings.
