The mission of St. John's Episcopal Preschool is to celebrate children's depth of wonder and joy in the world, and to engage with them and their families in their explorations. In a rich environment, children collaborate with experienced teachers to extend their thinking and to develop their unique abilities. As a ministry of St. John's Episcopal Church, we seek to form a bridge to the wider community, reflect its diversity, and support the full potential of childhood.
Services
St. John's Preschool is inspired by the Municipal Preschools and Infant-Toddler Centers of Reggio Emilia, Italy, which provide the philosophical foundation for our values and actions. Our launching point is the belief that all children are competent, capable, and intelligent. It is vital to our program that children and adults build and develop a competency to observe, exchange, and dialogue with each other.
St. John's Episcopal Preschool offers an inquiry based summer program serving children from 2.5 to 9 years old. Together with children, St. John's teachers and their associates embark on an exploration of broad topics, incorporating the philosophy of St. John's Episcopal Preschool with the whimsy and joy of summer.
A typical morning at St. John's begins when parents bring their children into the classroom and spend a short time with them to ease the transition from home to school. This is followed by Morning Meeting, when children and teachers make their plans for the day. Teachers have prepared an environment rich in materials and possibilities.
The St. John's Preschool community includes the children, their families, and teachers. We value and expect the participation of all preschool families and welcome their points of view. Parents are an integral part of the life of St. John's. The involvement of parents reaches beyond fundraising, into all aspects of the school.
We believe the preschool extends beyond the blue front door, focusing on each child, not in isolation, but in relation to our community and the wider society. We believe that children are active citizens with rights, who are participating members in their local community, alongside of other children, teachers, and families.
