Uncle Al's Automotive is a family-owned business, serving you since 1996. Owner Alan Anderson grew up in the Milwaukie area and worked at several auto repair shops in Milwaukie and Oregon City in the early 1990's. His interest in anything with an engine only grew with each experience. In 1996, he ventured out on his own and founded Uncle Al's Mobile Auto & Marine Service.
It was such a success, he needed to expand after one year. That's when he took over Beta Automotive in Gresham. By the end of 1998, he was looking to expand once again. In the spring of 1999, he purchased the building where Uncle Al's Automotive now sits, near the heart of downtown Gladstone. But it wasn't an easy move!

While I was not overly impressed with Al's customer service or how he he clearly steered away from wanting to discuss the costs on the bill, the most irritating part of my interaction was his lack of concern for his customer's vehicle.
One of his guys parked my car a block away from the shop and did not lock the vehicle. They parked it at about 3:53 pm and I did not arrive until a few minutes before 5:00 pm (about an hour). I live 1 mile from this shop, and I stopped in the other day because I heard good things about it.
This is my limited experience.
When I walked in there was a young man at the counter who told me that the owner was on a phone call. I told him about the vehicle I need repaired. It's probably a $500-$1000 job.
He took down all the details and told me that "Al" would contact me by phone to set up an appointment in about 10-15 minutes.
That was 2 days ago.
Will I go back there?
No.
Will I find another shop that wants my business?
Yes.
That's it.

Update: I used uncle Al's back in February 2021. I had several things done on a new (used) vehicle. I left with all the work done that was asked for, and a good idea of things that would need to be looked at in the future. So my wife and I started off on our 3200 mile cross country trip in the new car the next day. Everything was going well untill we got in to Topeka KS, some 2300 miles away. We had an issue with a timing belt skipping a few teeth and causing issues. We found a shop in Kansas and they said they could fix the issue. I called al and asked

The team at Uncle Al's automotive are absolutely fabulous. I've had several vehicles worked on, from tune ups, oil changes, clutch replacements, and new transmissions. I could go on. Al & team have always been, professional, respectful, honest & affordable. Being a female sometimes people take advantage. That's definitely not the case here. I trust that they will take care of whatever concerns or questions I have. I'm extremely transparent and direct and it's so refreshing when I know that I will get the same in return. I definitely highly recommend this shop.

Unprofessional and awkward/rude. I stopped by asking about transmission work, said were busy but stop by next week and they can do the work. I asked when. “Anytime”. I was already a bit dubious at this point. Fast forward, I take time off work to come in the next week. They said were busy but can at least take a quick look, and said to leave the car and come back in a couple hours. I’m already slightly annoyed at this point- clearly scheduling and being considerate of my time doesn’t appear to be a priority at this point. Very unsatisfied. I was hoping to get a diagnosis by Day 2. Still no word. I don't have time to wait for a couple of knuckle heads to get around to repairing my vehicle on their time. I visited the shop twice and both times there was no work being done on anybody's vehicles. Just 1 guy kicking rocks. I took my vehicle up the street and got a diagnosis within hours from another shop. Very poor service. Don't go. Also there is a dog locked in a room barking non-stop.

Uncle Al’s Automotive performed a thorough and detail-oriented repair of the air conditioning system on my ‘97 Chevy 1 ton pickup in preparation for an extended trip into the late summer heat of SE Oregon. My experience consisted of incredibly slow repairs, incredibly poor communication, an incredibly high bill, and a car that wasn't fixed. After this experience I took my vehicle back to the usual shop I go to in Vancouver where the problem was solved efficiently for 1/3 the price. From what I've heard most people have a good experience, but mine was a nightmare.

My husband and I are moving from WA to FL and shorty into our journey one of our cars needed to be repaired. It was about an hour before they were due to close when we brought it in. When they found out we were in the middle of a move with 2 young boys 3 cats and a dog, they fixed it right away. They could have charged us anything and we would have paid it given our situation, but they didnt. They were honest and reasonably priced. We couldn't have had a more stress free and easy experience. Wish all mechanics were like this.

I called the other day in the morning for an estimate on a significant repair. I got their voicemail, so I left a detailed message of what was wrong with my vehicle. (It took another shop about 5 minutes to come up with their estimate.) I hadn't heard back from Uncle Al's near the end of the day, so I thought I'd see if I could actually talk with someone. A person picked up their phone and could see who I was from the caller ID and knew what my repair was from my message. We have been using Uncle Al's for years. I always trust them to do high quality work at a reasonable price. I feel confident that I am paying a fair cost for the worn being done. They give excellent estimates on how long the work will take. And most importantly my car is returned in great shape. They even helped in a pinch when I needed to pass DEQ. Won't go anywhere else to have work done on our cars.

This place is so shady. They park my daughters car on the street for over six weeks before they even put it in their shop to look at it. We call every week and they either never answer or call back or say we are just too busy to get to it or oh we left a message -no they didn't -they lied then finally they say it'll be 200 to look at it , which we say ok. Every day my husband drives by and can tell they never move it so it still took another several weeks then they call my husband with some estimate between 2800-3800 but said can't guarantee it would fix it! I took my car in explaining what was wrong with written information. (Their request) Then 3 weeks later says they are too busy to work on it. I didn't get a call back until the last minute either. Another thing is they gave me alot of double talk. Bottom line I communicated what was wrong and they agreed to work on it. Now its oh it could be this but we are too busy. They wanted it to be something simple because they are too busy? Or was it that it was beyone their skill? I asked. Then he said "Let's call it that" No apology and a waste of time.

This shop has really fair prices and every issue I have had with my vehicles gets fixed period! I have had horrible experiences with other automotive shops in the past but Uncle Al's shop has always been upfront with me about my cars problems and their ability to fix those problems.

I just had our 2003 Ford Escape repaired by these guys. Great service and the bid they gave me was spot on with no surprises. I had been told by another repair shop that it needed a new timing belt. I checked the price and learned from AL that my vehicle doesn't even have a timing belt. I had them do other work based on their honesty and it was a smooth and fair process. My car was leaking fluid and the radiator kept needing to be filled. My brilliant deduction was that I had a leaking radiator. I started getting quotes for said radiator, all were between $200 and $300. The dealership wanted more than $400 and my left leg. Anyway, Al was the only guy that said..."If you would like to leave your car with us, we will diagnose it FREE of charge, so that you know exactly what the problem is." This place doesn't deserve the severity of negative reviews. It is a small shop and they seem much more geared toward doing what is necessary to help fix a problem, not make unnecessary work just to make more money. They got me out of there for cheaper than anywhere else. I have personally had a great experience with them during my one visit, and I plan to return.

Honestly, this place was terrible. Charged way more than I was quoted. Never called with updates when they found something wrong with my car. They were also very rude to not only me, but my family as well. I went to uncle als because of convenience, and I really regret it. Took them 3 weeks to get my car up and running. I really don't recommend this place. After having the work done, another shop told me that I got charged way too much for the work that was done. Seriously disappointed because the reviews made the place sound really good.
