At a deep body level we feel what we believe. Anxiety is a hyper focus on real or imagined problems, reinforced by body tension. Depression happens when anxiety is too high for too long, and you can't get it down. Behaviors can seem to happen without any decision - panic attacks, phobias, tics, nail-biting, hair pulling, OCD, Tourette's.
Everything from something like snacking when you're trying to diet to things like seizures that have no neurological basis, or other functional neurological symptoms which just feel completely beyond your control. Even chronic physical pain has a strong emotional component. Discipline and self-discipline don't seem to help.

I am generally successful with my clients, and usually we're together for just a few weeks. Of course no one can guarantee human behavior, but there seem to be a few key reasons why things tend to turn out well. I understand that emotion is the power of change, and I am not afraid to go with you to deal with significant emotions.
Hypnosis can be an effective aid to children and adults being treated by a physician for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, formerly Attention Deficit Disorder, ADD). ADHD is presented as a condition, which seems "stuck, " but it is actually a set of behaviors. Although these behaviors are powerfully driven by emotion ( so they are not voluntary or easily changed by "discipline"), behaviors can be changed at an emotional level.
I am delighted to be teaching a two-day workshop on Hypnosis: Standard-of-Care Relief for Physical Pain. Counselors and Social Workers can get 6 CEs. The workshop is for the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, so you'll be interacting with participants from down under! We are going to cover the neurological basis of hypnotic pain relief, but really focus on practical skills.
People tell themselves stories that infuse certain parts of their lives and actions with great meaning and de-emphasize other aspects. But had any of them chosen to tell himself or herself a somewhat different story, the resulting pattern of more-meaningful and less-meaningful aspects of his or her life would have been quite different (Howard, 1989, p. 168).
I am happy to see you at my office in downtown Columbia. I am also a Board-Certified TeleMental Health Counselor and I can effectively work with you securely by phone or webcam. We can also meet this way for the consultation. This has been shown to be as effective as in person counseling. Please let me know if you want to meet using technology.
