When tooth decay infects deeper into a tooth, it can reach the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is the center of the tooth and it contains nerves and blood, which provide nutrition and sensory feeling for the tooth. Decay reaching the pulp leaves an open channel to the nerve. So when food, drinks, and even air hit the tooth, the nerve is being directly stimulated.
It's like a spa treatment for your teeth! Dental cleanings are an important part of your regular visits that will allow the dentist or hygienist to identify problem signs and teach patients and parents how to correct habits before they need treatment. For kids 3 and under, the focus of a cleaning is more about showing parents how to brush their child's teeth.
When a cavity infects a tooth to the point that a normal filling won't hold up, your dentist may recommend crowns or "caps". A cap is used to fully cover the portion of the tooth not already covered up by the gums. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed with the drill, the tooth is shaved down to make space for the cap, and the cap is then cemented on the tooth.
Your first visit at Happy Teeth Dental Centers will begin with an initial examination/consultation and x-rays. At this appointment your dentist will screen your medical history and discuss potential issues that may preclude you from having dental work done. Our dentists will work closely with your primary care physician to ensure that any treatment we deliver doesn't interfere with or adversely affect your health.
The American Dental Association and the State of Texas recommend a child's first visit to the dentist be at 6 months old to establish a First Dental Home. Many kids at this age can end up with a condition called Severe Early Childhood Caries, which is caused by an excessive exposure to sugary drinks, including milk and juice.
