The doors of Wood Funeral Home, Inc. opened in August of 1959 under the vision of Clarence and Geraldine Bowser Wood. The young couple was inspired by two family members who were already funeral directors, Elmer "Bus" Bullock in Harve De Gras, Maryland, and Newton S. Bowser in Topeka, Kansas. Wood Funeral Home was established at 5537-39 W. Girard Avenue and provided dedicated, professional funeral services to the Philadelphia community.
Since 1959, our professional staff is completely committed to helping each family celebrate the life of their loved one in a meaningful way. Because we are a family ourselves, we realize that each family has its own set of unique needs. That is why we offer truly customized services to meet the wishes of each family.
When you first begin the process of designing a funeral, the decisions you'll face might seem overwhelming at first. We're here to help you tackle the choices one by one and make the journey one of love, healing, and life celebration.
The process can be broken down into two stages: decisions regarding the service and how you'd like to honor your loved one's life, and decisions regarding how you'd like to care for your loved one's physical remains.Whether it's formal or informal, traditional or offbeat, a funeral provides an opportunity for family and friends to gather and support one another in taking the first steps of their healing journey.

My Aunt Roslyn’s home going service was at Woods Funeral Home on 12/3 and it couldn’t have been at a better place. I loved that it was black owned and family oriented, (the owners passed the business on to their child) and the current president was very professional. If you are in the West philadelphia area I would highly recommend …

The staff @ WFH were nothing short of AMAZING! Cynthia has such a sweet peaceful spirit and they really know how to talk and help families. From the time they picked up my mother-in-laws body at the house until the burial they were very professional, courteous and understanding. Even my father-in-law was impressed with the limo driver who kept him talking the entire time we were there. It was definitely a change from his drawn back quietness after she passed.
Some companies prey on families vulnerability and over charge because they believe they can. I am grateful that they are not in the business

When there is such a loss, emotions run high and unfortunately, it can be an unwanted and tense situation. The attention given, and concern for everyone's well being was truly a priority. We cannot express enough, our gratitude and appreciation to the Wood family and their team. Their patience, graciousness and understanding was most welcomed and needed at that time. Everything was peacefully embracing!

I came here maybe three years ago to get my father’s funeral plans all together. This year he passed and when I tell you the Family made everything absolutely easy for me during the hardest time of my life, that would be an understatement. Wanda and Cynthia are by far the best funeral directors I’ve seen within Philadelphia, and based on how they treated, talked, and made things cost effective for me, I would recommend them to anybody!

Our family decided on Wood Funeral Home to prepare our loved one for her celebration of life, and we are so happy we did. Cynthia and the entire staff were professional and overwhelmingly caring. She provided so much attention to detail. She made what could have been a very difficult task run smoothly. Our family highly recommend Wood Funeral Home.

Wanda Woods and Nakeesa were exceptional with the planning and orchestration of my father's memorial service. I would recommend them to any and everyone. You can tell that their parents taught them the value of respect and how to anticipate ones needs at such a devastating time. Many people gave me accolades on the service, but I tell them that the Woods Funeral Home were the ones to congratulate because they were AWESOME!!
