Shepherd of the Hills preschool was founded in the fall of 1985. When we first opened we had one 3 Year-Old and one 4 Year-Old class which gave us a total of 46 children. Both classes had a M-W-F and a T-Th component. In September of 1986, we added a second 3 year-old classroom, bringing our total number of students to 72.

In 1992, we added an Afternoon Extended Program which ran until 2:00pm. And, in 1996 the now famous Cherubs Program was put in place, extending our hours from 7:30am to 5:30pm. 2011, the year of our 25th anniversary brought about another exciting change. In place of our 5 day extended care program we implemented a second T-Th 4 year old class to accommodate the growing need in our community.
Services
Our Early Childhood Center offers a child-centered curriculum. We approach learning in a variety of styles to accommodate different learning styles - auditory, visual, spatial, linguistic, and kinesthetic. Our day has a balance between active and quiet times, individual and group activities, large - motor and small - motor activities, and child - initiated as well as adult - initiated activities.
Kathy has been a teacher here since 1986, although, she has been in the teaching field for over 25 years. In the beginning years she taught the young 3's. She moved to the 4/5's for one year before settling in to the older 3's where she taught for the next 14 years. After 2 years of juggling both roles the decision was made in 2006 to devote full time as preschool director.
Shepherd of the Hills Preschool is governed by the Preschool Board of Directors, which is comprised of 5 members. 3 of the 5 members must be members of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. The other 2 members, are either church members or parents of children in the preschool. Within the 5 members, 4 hold positions on the executive board which are the chairperson, a vice chairperson, board secretary, and a financial advisor.
We offer two 3 year-old classes. They both follow the same basic curriculum but are split up according to birthdays. They start the year learning their colors, one color a week and in late October they begin learning shapes. In January-March they learn numbers 1-10 and throughout the year they will explore the beginning stages of the Handwriting without Tears Program.
Children eligible for preschool will be 3 years old, potty trained, through enrollment into Kindergarten. Children shall be toilet trained and capable of caring for their needs, except in an emergency. Staff will schedule a conference & provide parents a resource list if a child is identified as having special needs, i.e. speech, language comprehensive, gross motor, behavioral issues.
