The definition of "formative" has always helped serve us with a good reminder of who all of us at Formative Fitness are. Fitness is such a broad thing, and there is so much "information" out there. How do we chose the right path to reach our health and fitness goals based upon our own individual preferences, lifestyle and background?

Formative Fitness provides our clients with individualized personal training, as well as our F.I.T. program, from our premiere personal training studio, located in beautiful downtown Traverse City. Each of our experienced, nationally accredited, and hand-selected personal trainers and instructors work together to help each of our clients reach their unique goals in an enjoyable, lifestyle oriented way.

Formative Fitness opened its doors in 2009 to provide a comfortable, friendly personal training studio to those in the Traverse City area. Conveniently located on State Street in Downtown Traverse City, it is only a short walk or drive for most people in our beautiful area. Taking you through good workouts is just the beginning!
Sebastian Garbsch, founder of Formative Fitness, always tries to turn negative experiences into positive ones. After losing his father at a very young age, largely due to an unhealthy lifestyle, Sebastian became committed to living a healthy, balanced life.

For almost a decade, Sebastian has been sharing his passion for health and fitness with others, not simply through personal training, but rather by proactively helping them make health and fitness a part of their daily lives.Over the years, Sebastian has worked with clients from various backgrounds, with a wide range of goals, and tailors their programs to meet these goals.
Formative Fitness isn't a workout - nor is it a gym. What we are is an individually customized mixture of movement, proper nutrition, motivation, structure, accountability and enjoyment that allows our clients to reach their proprietary health goals, and sustain them for the rest of their lives.

Formative Fitness provides our clients with the most updated, diverse, experienced and nationally certified trainers in a comfortable studio setting that is located in downtown Traverse City.Our goal is to allow you to reach your goals in a healthy, enjoyable, sustainable, and lifestyle-oriented way, without needing to go to the gym!
If you aren't in Traverse City, or do a lot of traveling and still want a top-notch trainer to help you reach your goals, we can help! We have over 8 years of experience doing 1-1 training, currently using Zoom or FaceTime. In addition, we can provide complete programming for clients who need the correct structure of a trainer, even when on the go.

I was the kind of person who did the gym membership thing and it always fizzled out quickly because a.) I had no clue what to do on any of the machines and b.) felt pretty intimidated by all the people who did seem to know what the hell they were doing.
Finally, after years of not working out, a client of mine referred me to Formative Fitness. I was incredibly suspicious. But I began to train with Brenden, fully expecting it to be a wholly miserable experience of pain and soreness and more pain. But it turns out having a well rounded strength training routine can actually make your life better

Game changer!!! Brenden and Formative Fitness have changed the way I approach fitness. I actually look forward to working out. They work with you one-on-one to tailor a workout routine specific to your needs and make sure to mix it up constantly to keep it entertaining. I went from one 30 minute session a week to two 45 minute sessions per week and I could not be happier with the results. Take the first free class they offer and get hooked like me!
