Aikido Chuseikan of Tampa Bay is Tampa's most respected school for traditional Japanese martial arts. We offer experienced, safe, and serious instruction for men and women at all ages and levels including Aikido and Zen meditation.
While we are serious about practical defense, our members are focused on cultivating mindfulness, composure, and calmness from martial training and using those lessons to create positive outcomes for every-day conflicts - at home, at work, and in society. We are seeking thoughtful students who want more from their training than sport or violence.

Michi - "the Way" - can meaningfully describe our martial practice if we define it as pursuing spiritual integrity, the extent to which our ideals match our behavior under pressure. Participation is limited to the first 30 people that register with payment. Aikido can be a beautiful framework for self-discovery.
Aikido is a non-competitive martial way that emphasizes being unattackable rather than destroying others.
While we practice our art based on serious combat principles like multiple attackers and defense against weapons, we emphasize cultivating a mindset, body, and reactions that are useful in real life: our jobs, our relationships, with our families and friends, and not just against a physical attacker or for gaining points in a sport tournament. In training, we help each other, we practice to avoid injury, and we cultivate lifelong friends.

There are many legendary warrior archetypes, and the man who was Morihei Ueshiba lived them all. We was born a sickly child, and overcame his illness through strict martial training. He mastered many martial schools quickly. He became the unconventional swordsman that no master could defeat. He became a warrior ascetic, a spiritual hermit, who meditated on mountains and under waterfalls to achieve enlightenment.
The essence of Budo is not the art of fighting, or narrow technique, but an art of personal refinement and of protecting the quality of life. Aikido is first and always Budo. Without the heart of a warrior and the deep desire to protect society, to protect all life, Aikido becomes an empty dance. Budo (the Warrior Way) is its spirit.
If all you seek is a workout, any gym will do. If you need validation from competitions and trophies, there are many martial sports available. However, if you are looking for something more, that cultivates and relies upon what is inside you as a complete, healthy person, then Aikido might be your calling.

I cannot see a better dojo to learn aikido or life fundamentals in the bay area. Not only is Aikido Chuseikan of Tampa Bay the premier location to study aikido, but it also teaches balance, nurtures self-respect, communication and encourages students to see themselves for who they want to be. The youth program gives opportunity to establish the building blocks of maturity and discipline at an early age, while providing an opportunity for parents to become involved in something with their children that will surpass a shared hobby and grow into a way of life. The students and instructors are more

The dojo itself is beautiful. Guy Sensei and Don Sensei offer excellent instruction, and together have nearly fifty years of experience in the study of Aikido. In addition to the impressive instruction, the other members of the dojo are quite experienced martial artists themselves. As a visitor from out of town, I have always found the teachers and students here warm and inviting.
I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this dojo if you are at all interested in cultivating a serious study of martial arts.

The dojo isn't huge, but nestled in the back streets of historic Ybor City stepping through the doors takes you into a space that's obviously been crafted with love and care.
The students range from college freshmen to retirees, and there are several experienced teachers (senseis) with occasional visiting ones from further afield, so this isn't just one person's belts for money business. Everyone was incredibly friendly and supportive and made me immediately feel welcome.

Guy and Don Sensei are examples of the integrity that stands as a base for the future of Aikido. The integrity of their efforts, the discipline of their personal training are all aimed at the betterment of their students. They are well thought of in the Aikido community locally and nationally. Anyone afforded the opportunity should train with them.
In addition, the students of their dojo provide a fabric of intensity that is second to no dojo I am aware of. If you train with any of them you touch their instructors.
I recommend them all highly. Beautiful dojo too.
