Services
Grassroots is dedicated to meeting the physical therapy needs of the greater Salt Lake community. Whether you have a new injury or long-standing pain, we want to help you return to living life pain free!

Grassroots offers one-on-one evaluation and treatment sessions in our Sugarhouse clinic that aim to understand the nature of your individual complaints and to provide you with the most effective, evidence-based solutions and self-management programs. Our therapists share their expertise with you, so that you can keep your body pain-free and performing at your optimal level.
While we value in-person connection, we also recognize that there are many individuals who would benefit from our specialized care who cannot come see us in our Salt Lake City, UT or Jackson, WY physical therapy clinics. Our clinical assessment skills are easily transferable to Virtual PT Visits because we emphasize independence and education with every client.
Regain and optimize your quality of life by learning to become your own body mechanic through instructional videos that address common challenges like knee pain from running, golfer's elbow tendinitis and sciatica, plus many more.

Esther Smith (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and Eva Kauffman (Master Pilates Instructor) have combined their philosophies into videos designed to help you understand your body better and teach you how to heal through movement.Using the science and art of physical therapy and the holistic approach of the Pilates Method, they have created hybrid kits of exercises for specific body areas and conditions that you can safely and effectively do at home.
Choosing someone who resonates with you and your goals for physical therapy treatment is an important first step on the road to recovery. She is also available for Virtual Physical Therapy Visits for clients located in Utah and Wyoming. Include details about where you are located and the nature of your request to work with Esther.
Grassroots is a cash pay practice, meaning that we do not network with any private insurance companies or Medicare/Medicaid. At our clinic, a Doctor of Physical Therapy will work with you 1-on-1 for the entirety of each visit. We respect your investment in your body. Our focus is on helping you achieve your goals, educating you, and putting you at the helm of your medical care.

Esther, I just wanted to say thank you so much for working with me this spring. When I injured my finger I felt totally hopeless and like I would never climb hard again. After talking to you, seeing Katy in SLC, and continuing rehab, I ended up having a great season at Maple. So THANKS! I really appreciate your help.

In September 2017 I was hit by a negligent driver while riding my bike to school. The accident left me with a herniated disc at L5S1 and an aggravated nerve. For the last 47 months I've dealt with chronic pain, loss of mobility/range of motion, and the inability to physically exert myself whenever an activity involved fully extending my right leg or forward flection. In that time I've had help from 2 chiropractors, 2 physicians, 2 back specialists, 3 physical therapists, 4 epidurals, and 3 years of physical therapy.
As of my last physical therapy appointment I've regained almost all mobility,

Esther is the BEST! I honestly have nothing but great things to say about my experience working with Esther and her team. I learned about Esther and her work with professional rock climbers, as well as other elite athletes. I live in Minnesota and wanted to work with someone who fully understood rock climbing. My experience is that there are many therapists who are great at what they do, but they do not understand the mechanics of climbing. I emailed Esther about my nagging left shoulder symptoms that had been bothering me for over 7 years. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her response and

Andrew says “I understand” a lot and had pictures explaining what he thought was causing my pain. However, he didn’t understand that my problem was beyond his ability. I walked in to see him for our first visit, but then had to use a cane after following his advice. I needed to use a walker after our second visit. No more visits to Grassroots! It took the nerve doctor five minutes to see that my problem wasn’t nerves or muscles, but in the bones and he send me to have an x-ray and to talk with an orthopedic surgeon. A total hip solved the problem and I’m walking almost normally now.

Key points:
1. Esther Smith is the BOSS
2. I have never met with her in person, only virtually, yet in the course of a few months, she has done more work for me than 4 years of in-person physical therapists.
3. Worth every penny. I walked away from every session with knowledge and skills to apply to my rehab.
Details:
I've had shoulder pain from an injury for 4 years and just sort of came to terms with this being the new norm. I sought out Esther Smith while climbing in Utah and started meeting with her virtually. Funny enough, I originally sought her out for a finger/tendon injury, but she

I came in not really knowing what to expect with PT. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my femoral neck. Working with Amy Frugé,, she quickly showed me that it was my back. We were able to work through it to get me back in track to resuming my running, climbing, and snowboarding! There was no extra fluff that I felt was unnecessary, everything in each session helped to improve my situation. I loved how professional and awesome Amy was! She can definitely relate to the SLC canyon athletes which is nice!

As a long-distance trail runner with ongoing knee pain, I was recommended to Sarah McNurlin by another trail runner who said Sarah would work to find and address the root of my pain rather than simply relieving the symptoms. Sarah is a total master in solving the puzzle. Her goal was always to work for complete resolution of what seemed to me to be a chronic knee pain I could learn to manage at best. She cares to educate her patients, and distills the information using creative analogies that make it easier to understand. She has also given me a handful of exercises and tools I can use at home

After developing persistent knee pain that left me unable to ride a bike for several months, I was recommended to grassroots my some local friends. I saw Amy Frugé, who quickly recognized that my issue was stemming from repeated, sustained lumbar flexion. Each session I was given new, helpful exercises to alleviate pain, gain strength and recover function. Less than two months after starting weekly sessions at Grassroots, I am totally pain free and back on the bike with no limitations! I am blown away by how effective Amy’s methods were. I have walked away from my time at Grassroots feeling

I went to Grassrots to help solve some sciatic nerve pain. Working with Andrew, he diagnosed the root cause of the problem and gave me a stretching routine to move spinal tissue back into place so it was not impinging on the nerve. We started with in-person visits then moved to virtual visits which were great since I could easily do them from work. The problem was solved and I'm now pain-free. Great PT.
