I had a haircut by Eun a few days ago. My hairstyle is short and it's sometimes more difficult to cut short hair than long hair. She was very detailed and took her time. I like my hair cut. She cut the hair dry first, then cut it again after washing, and checked it again after blow drying. Would go back to her again.

Absolutely horrible haircut experience from Eun Kyung. I showed her the haircut I wanted but she didn’t pay attention to the things not to do about my hair and just went ahead to chop off a ton of hair of mine. Of course in the end my hair looks completely opposite from the pictures/video I showed her. And the way she cut hair seemed very unprofessional and when I showed her exactly how to trim my hair, she just didn’t get it at all. She’s the nicest person to talk to, but she isn’t equipped with enough skills and knowledge to cut hair.

Just had my second appt at HDZ....decided to get highlights based on a recommendation from my last haircut with Juan. Today Josie and Mahshid helped me. They used a newer highlighting technique that makes the highlights look more like movement and dimension. I absolutely LOVE my new look! I have never posted pictures with a review before but decided to today so you can see. I love HDZ and all of the people who work here are so nice! Looking forward to my next appointment :)

Such a great salon!! I went for a treatment and every step of the way was told what would be done to my hair and why. The shampooing was amazing, she did little massages all over my head, and when she applied the treatment brushed it through with a comb! (Something important that a lot of salons neglect to do). After multiple shampoos and sitting under the heater my hair was blow dried (I have so much hair that I fell asleep) and I was given an at home treatment to follow up. Communication was not clear when booking a haircut with bang trim. Friend came in expecting a haircut but was only booked for 15 min. Salon is understaffed so they could not accommodate. Their men’s hair cut was alright, looking a bit unfinished. They do not provide razor or close cut around hairline. Might try this place again but wouldn’t recommend to anyone else.

Ok, I am OBSESSED with my hair!! Denis was my stylist who blessed me with the most gorgeous warm brown balayage!! He really listened to me and what I wanted. He even explained everything to me every step of the way. And the way he did my hair was so gentle, always making sure I was comfortable and OK. I've gotten my hair done by a few people and I've always felt lukewarm about the result, but Dennis really blew my expectation away. Worst hair cut ever!!!! My hair looks like a mess now. Even my husband asked me what's wrong with your hair, looked really bad. Unprofessional hair stylist, heated me by the blow drier 4 times. And they wanted to charge me $72 for ruin my hair. It was unacceptable. I've tried more than 5 hair salon in DMV. This was my worst experience.

When I moved to DC 6 months ago, I was a bit nervous to see not many Japanese stylists in the area. However, I stumbled upon Hair Design Zone through Yelp and decided to give it a try after reading Juan's experience of working in Japan for over a decade.

I had a haircut appointment back in March and meant to post my review earlier. Overall 4 stars for technique and effort, but service could be better.
I brought some photos in of a Korean style cut I wanted, and asked the stylist (I won't name) if it would work with my naturally wavy hair. Stylist said they could do it and immediately proceeded to wash my hair and cut it wet, and gave me these choppy layers on the underside of my hair without telling me.
When blow dried straight, it probably would look fine, but when my hair dried naturally it was a mess, my curl/wave pattern was messed

Awesome salon! Juan usually does my hair. She is very kind and professional. She keeps running her salon in a very safe way during this special time. Very reliable! I was trying to make a hair dying appointment with Juan the other day. She was not available and she recommended Denis to me. I was nervous at the beginning but when it came out I was definitely amazed! It took us longer than we expected. But Denis had so much patience to achieve the best result! If you are after the hair styles trending in east asian countries like Japan and South Korea, I would recommend coming here!! They can speak Japanese, Korean (I think), Chinese and English fluently. I had Juan Ma cut and style my hair today, and I just let her do whatever she thought would suit my face, and I got a hair cut like one I have never had before. She really thought about what would suit me and thought about what was currently trending in hair. Not to mention they use Japanese hair products which are awesome. If you feel like you have a really boring, cookie-cutter hairstyle right now

I haven't gotten a hair cut in over a year, I tend to just go to a random one place to just chop off my hair until the next year. But this time, I wanted to get a Brazilian blowout to contain my hair frizz and this salon had a good overall reputation.

Love my digital perm! This is a new style for me with Japanese straightening at the top and digital perm at the bottom. I got it because I wanted some style in my hair but don't want to have to use curling iron every day. The salon was very clean and the everyone was really friendly from the desk staff to the owner herself. I would highly recommend this place for perms!

Hair design zone is the only place I'd go for perming my hair (though I've done haircuts and coloring in the past and my hair always looks great). I'm super impressed by Juan's talents and attention to detail. She spent time understanding my needs and preferences but also gave me her professional insights. My hair is thin and fine so she suggested a particular type of perming, which would maintain the curves for longer. Juan also takes pains making sure my hair was curled properly (see my picture). I felt she was providing an outstanding service and my hair is good in her hands

I came here for an appointment in May 2019 with Eun. It was on a Saturday at 10:30 and Eun seemed to have the best availability that day; I didn't really have a stylist preference since I'd never been here before. I just needed a cut; I had waist-long hair that reminded me I probably hadn't been to a hair salon in over a year. In the past I'd always gotten my hair cut at a fairly cheap, no-frills place that had been cutting my hair occasionally since I was in high school, but I decided to branch out and see if I saw a difference in the results at a more expensive salon.

Great experience! Scheduling was quick and easy. Stopped for a consultation and scheduling the actual appointment. Denis spent 4 hours applying the Japanese Hair straightening treatment to my hair, frequently asking if I needed anything (drink or snack etc) , and if the water and hair blower temperature were okay. He verified the price and treatment before starting, kept me informed of what he was doing and how long it would take, and engaged me in conversation during the process. Other employees were very kind and considerate ensuring I had sufficient entertainment, and no one pushed any products
