Healthcare isn't a luxury. Those of us with health insurance go to sleep each night with security of knowing if we need to go to the doctor, we're covered. Shouldn't everyone have that same comfort?. The Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, Inc., is a volunteer nonprofit organization providing free primary and preventive medical care to low-income working people in Bergen County without insurance or the means to pay for care.
BVMI is the only state-licensed ambulatory care facility in the county that offers free healthcare for individuals earning up to 250% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines who do not have health insurance. BVMI's newsletter the "Checkup" is published 3 times a year and is filled with inspiring stories about our patients, our volunteers, and our donors.

Services
In 2001, Sam Cassell, an internist in Fair Lawn, retired from active practice. He did all the things that you are supposed to do when you retire - read books, joined the Y, played bridge and traveled. While on a trip to the Far East, he was instrumental in arranging for a young Vietnamese girl to get free medical treatment in the US.
When you support BVMI monthly, you ensure that we are getting the refills we need so we can in turn provide the care that our patients need. Powered by passionate volunteers, BVMI meets the medical needs of low-income, working, uninsured adults in Bergen County by providing free, comprehensive, patient-centered primary healthcare. To improve the health and well-being of those we serve, reduce the use of hospital emergency services, and serve as a model of improving access to healthcare through volunteerism.
BVMI is governed by a Board of Trustees. They provide strategic oversight and direction for BVMI, and ensure adequate resources to provide care to patients.
