What is Depression? Depression is a serious mental illness; it's not something that you have made up in your head. It's more than just feeling "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days. It is feeling down and low and hopeless for weeks at a time. Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad, but these feelings are usually fleeting and pass within a few days.
Typically triggered by an emotional hurt, anger is usually experienced as an unpleasant feeling that occurs when we think we have been injured, mistreated, opposed in our long-held views, or when we are faced with obstacles that keep us from attaining personal goals. The experience of anger varies widely; how often anger occurs, how intensely it is felt, and how long it lasts are different for each person.
This disorder is often characterized by a pattern of continued pathological thinking, behaviors, and/or use of substances to deal with underlying anxiety, depression or stress in one's life. When we have become dependent on that behavior to the extent it jeopardizes our health, relationships, welfare and/or safety, and we continue to repeat the behavior we have developed an addiction.
Tobacco dependence is a chronic condition that often requires repeated intervention. This intervention, if delivered in a timely and effective manner may significantly reduce the smoker's risk of suffering from smoking related diseases. Linda Kibrick, MSW, LCSW, LCADC and Bill Rhoads, MSW, LCSW are NJ Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists.
What is Stress? Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger, whether it's real or imagined, the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the "fight or flight" reaction, or the stress response.
