Services
Dr. Joe Austin opened Companion Animal Hospital in the 1950's, giving it the distinction of being the oldest veterinary practice in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area. Dr. Austin primarily serviced the dairies of southern Tangipahoa and would do some small animal practice when he had the time. Gradually, the dairy industry declined and his emphasis changed so that when he retired in 1982, the practice had become exclusively small animal.
If you live in the communities of Hammond, Ponchatoula, Loranger, Tickfaw, or Independence, Louisiana, and you need someone to look after your pet when you are away from home, bring your baby to Companion Animal Hospital, and we'll supply plenty of tender loving care. We offer professional boarding services with a vet on call to keep your pet safe and happy while you're away.
Dr. Gilbert moved to Covington when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Covington High School and went on to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He acquired a Bachelor's degree in Zoology and then his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 1981.
Companion Animal Hospital offers routine cleaning, scaling, polishing, fluoride treatment, and examination for pet owners in Hammond, Ponchatoula, Loranger, Tickfaw, and Independence, Louisiana. Our experienced veterinarians recommend initiating regular dental cleanings and exams when your pets are young to prevent the development of periodontal disease and keep your pet's mouth healthy and pain free.
Digital radiography has become an extremely effective and essential diagnostic tool for veterinarians because it is painless, safe, non-invasive, and it provides information about interior parts of the body quickly and without the need for numerous retakes. At Companion Animal Hospital, digital radiography enables us to assess the status of injuries or diseases that may be affecting your pet.

We absolutely LOVE this place! The vets and the staff are so friendly, knowledgeable, and very professional. They'll treat you and your animals like you matter. They're very understanding and accommodating and actually listen to you and your animal's needs. I have a dog who hates vets (because of the previous place we went to) and they were willing to work with us to help her get over her fear and didn't rush us in and out. So awesome! Absolutely recommend 💯

I lived nearer to Companion Animal Hospital than my regular vet's office, so when my dog started showing symptoms of pancreatitis I ran to them (as they were the nearest place).
They took him in as soon as they could. They were very helpful and kind. They explained things to me very clearly before going on with treatments. They were affordable, and they didn't try to push any unnecessary treatments just to make money (unlike my previous vets office).
They made my sweet boy feel better, and I will be making them my new regular vet. I do not ever leave reviews, but this place is wonderful

After slogging through a hard day's work I came home expecting to be greeted by my youthful orange tabby, Indiana Jones. He was nowhere in sight. Finally he hobbled home, yowling in pain and bleeding from his hip.
I immediately called Companion Animal Hospital and Doctor Gilbert met me after hours. Indiana was checked out, given pain medication, and scheduled for an x-ray first thing the following morning. Turns out he'd been shot! The top of his femur had been shattered by the bullet.
However, with the fantastic care of the vets at Companion Animal Hospital, Indy is back on his paws
