North Atlantic Montessori School was founded in 2009 for the purposes of providing a Montessori infant, toddler and preschool education for children between the ages of ten weeks to six years old. It is equipped with classically beautiful Montessori materials and child sized furniture based on Maria Montessori's principles that a structured, well-organized environment will allow children to learn intrinsically through curiosity and desire.

By having a well equipped, prepared environment the child is able to move freely about the classroom selecting prepared "works" (materials) to explore independently and at their own pace. Learning is not based on time frames or force. Children are encouraged to work at their own pace, in their own unique style, utilizing all of their senses, until they become masters of their skills.
Services
Our Nest, "nido" in Italian, houses our infant and toddler programs for children between the ages of 6 weeks to 3 year olds. This area is divided into 3 primary rooms (required by State of Maine licensing rules); the baby room for children between the ages of 6 weeks to 12 months old. The young toddler room for children between the ages of 12 months and 18 months.
There are five primary areas of the preschool classroom for children ages 3 to 6 year olds. Practical Life: Many of the goals of preschool practical life are very important first steps for further intellectual learning as well as physical and social emotional development.

Typical preschool practical life activities that help develop fine motor skills and coordination, concentration and independence are threading, squeezing, scooping, stirring and pouring, to name a few.Practical life activities also include care of ones' self and the environment. Examples of this include sweeping, polishing, setting the table, buttoning and more.
Maria Montessori was a brilliant doctor, a visionary, a Pulitzer Peace Prize nominee, living in Italy from 1872-1952. Dr. Montessori overcame many obstacles to educate herself during a time period when a woman would not have been accepted in this world. Her vision for the future of humanity was awe inspiring, taking peasant children running wild in the streets of Italy, into her classroom.

It was a great experience for my older child, 5, who had the same wonderful teacher. However do not send your younger children here. The caregivers changed every couple of months. My two year old struggled and instead of taking responsibility, the director and various inconsistent caregivers would blame me or my child. The director was nasty, rude and flat out unprofessional. I loved several teachers here, which is unfortunate that the owner is inept at communicating in a caring way or taking any responsibility for being able to attract consistent and capable caregivers in the 2-3 year old rooms

I have been employed at NAMS now for 3 years and it’s been a wonderful experience. The classrooms are very well organized, in terms of structured schedules, works for the children to explore with, and sensory activities supervised by teachers. The teachers are all very positive, easy to communicate with with families, and are accommodating to each child’s personality and schedule. If you’re wanting a school where your child is able to learn at their own pace, learn everyday life skills along the way, and a peaceful center, schedule a tour and come see for yourself!

Although the 2 year old classroom here was a great experience their 3 year old classroom was awful! The director is out of touch and supervisor lies to you and says they are going to do one thing for your child and then they do something completely different. If your child is not a perfect angel they will end up leaving in a matter of months, whether by the school’s choice or parents. They do not have got child’s best interest at heart whatsoever. I would not send your child here and if you have a child here I would consider looking elsewhere. They have been reported to DHHS for other reasons
