The hotel is beautiful, but the staff is truly what makes the Holbrooke 5-stars.
We are staying for a week, and a few days in a big snow storm hit Grass Valley and we’re going on day two of no power in the town. In spite of this, their staff has gone above and beyond to make everyone comfortable and safe. Those of us still here have been provided with coffee and tea, shovels to dig our cars out, games to play, and meals with what was available in the kitchen. They are truly rockstars and we can’t recommend staying here enough.
When there is power, the Golden Gate Saloon has fabulous food

Only due to the fact that I live in Southern California tonight's was the third time I was able to enjoy the food and libations a at Golden Gate Saloon. The Birria was fantastic and our server Natasha was not only helpful, but would show up when we had questions and let us be if it appeared we were good. My old fashioned and after dinner martini was wonderful. Our bartender, Kelley was very busy due to a concert a block away, but you wouldn't know it as she was attentive and made us feel that we were the only ones in the place. If you are ever in Grass Valley, the Golden Gate Saloon is

We stayed in the "Carriage House," an annex of the main hotel which has less expensive rooms ("less expensive" being $325, and this is Grass Valley, not Paris). The room was very small but clean and newly remodeled, with period decorative features and a very comfortable bed, but it had virtually none of the conveniences you expect from a nice hotel--or any hotel for that matter. There was no place to put our clothes so we couldn't unpack--no closet, no drawers, no shelves, just a single luggage rack. There were no convenient places to plug in our devices. And though the hotel has a bar and restaurant

I have had lunch here a few months ago and it was just okay. But I thought I would give them another try, this time for dinner.

The service was very good - out waiter knowledgeable about the menu and wine pairing. However, the food was mediocre. I think $30 for chicken and rice is steep, the waiter talked about the special seasoning and slow cooking and made it sound worth it. There is no price I would find fair for dry chicken and tasteless rice. I won't bother to detail the other meals ordered by our group of 4.

While the ambiance is nice, I would recommend only going there for

Such a beautiful hotel. We were in town for the Halloween event in the Iron Door and had a great time. The Holbrooke lobby was beautiful and unique, and the room was super cute, clean and had a modern twist on vintage style.

Fantastic and just plain kind service. We had a great experience that we would have enjoyed even if the food had been bad, which it totally wasn't. So good. Our party had one of each menu item and not one complaint. Highly recommend.

The renovation was spectacular! The service, impeccable and attention to detail was beyond my husband and my belief! We spent 3 nights there & felt like family members! So very gracious & the comfort was beyond belief. I wanted to stay in that bed all day, so, so comfortable…..like a pillow dream!
Cocktails in the iconic speak easy were done to perfection! Don’t miss this town & hotel, it will enhance what Grass Valley is known for!

Impressive renovation and loved the hotel. Only negative was at checkout; gentleman at front desk who was reading and completely ignored us. Then a very pleasant lady came out and helped us.
Loved the service, drinks, and food at the bar. This place is pricey, but we will probably come back.

Wait time to be seated was quick. Water and coffee came quick. Brunch beverages were slow. Scrambled eggs had the consistency of polenta. Very unusual. Potatoes were too salty. Bacon was just vet cooked. Might return for another meal but probably not for brunch. Servers were nice.

I'm not sure what happened but the all-around quality has gone down. Service staff is really nice but seem very new. Food quality and menu are nowhere near as good as they used to be. Atmosphere is still nice but it seems like this place made a grand entrance and couldn't keep it up. I really want to know what happened!

I enjoyed my stay very much. We were treated incredibly well by the staff. The bar/restaurant has great drinks and the most amazing chicken wings I've ever had. The furniture is updated, modern, and very comfortable. The historical atmosphere was so intriguing. Check out the basement when you go!

We booked the king suite for our wedding stay and hosted our wedding weekend events (a pre-wedding meet and greet and a post-wedding farewell brunch). The staff was absolutely amazing! The king suite is stunning. It was the perfect venue for my wife and the ladies in our wedding to get ready. The photos are incredible!
We hosted a meet and greet at the Iron Door and it couldn't have been better. The food we had passed around was fabulous (especially the sliders). The bartender was on top of everything and took such wonderful care of our guests.
The day after our wedding we hosted a farewell brunch

First time visiting in since they reopened. Had lunch with a girlfriend, Gigi was our server. She was absolutely amazing and the food was delicious. She was able to get us a tour with Tara of some of the rooms. The are beautiful!! They have done a wonderful job bringing life back to the Holbrook. I highly recommend as a local hangout.

When they're not yelling back drink order confirmations to customers as they're walking away from them, the bar staff are too busy bantering with each other. Sure, things can get busy, but I guess zero acknowledgement of me for five minutes after sitting down despite the bar being more empty than full. No biggie, as I was just mooching their air conditioning anyhow, but this place feels more like a roadhouse than a hotel bar. Which might be fine if everything weren't 20% more than across the street at Pour House, and half as good. At least their AC was pretty cold; will be back for

Sad to let my five star review recede... But tonight was utterly disappointing in just about every possible way, on my partners birthday of all days I chose to take her out to dinner at a place I had a great experience at recently, and looked forward to seeing what else they had going on!

Unfortunately they were gravely understaffed especially considering the fact that it was the Thursday night market in downtown GV, and the service was ridiculously slow and chaotic, the wait-staff were overloaded and confused, it was a mess... I don't know what was going on in the kitchen either, my tri

We've lived here for 7 years and have eagerly watched the Holbrook and National being renovated beautifully down to the smallest detail. It's honestly a blessing to this town to have these historic buildings restored beyond their original appeal. We've had brunch twice at the renovated Holbrook, and as much as I want to believe they have broken above the low bar set by some restaurants that cater to tourists, the experience has been disappointing both times.

I'm sad to say we won't be back soon. It's such a shame to see this establishment get 99% there and then drop

Our experience at the Golden Gate Saloon in the Holbrooke Hotel was beyond disappointing. It would be difficult to imagine a worse meal or more poorly run operation. We were seated for 20 minutes before our table got any attention, and then only drink orders. After another lengthy period we begged a waitress to take our orders. Food finally arrived at our table more than an hour after we were seated.
And I use the term "food" loosely. None of the four of us enjoyed our diverse entrees. I ordered Cast Iron Baked Tamale Pie ($24) which was supposed to contain smoked pork shoulder

We walked into the newly renovated Holbrook Hotel. Absolutely beautiful bar, lobby and dining rooms. We immediately decided to have our first dinner out in Grass Valley in over a year. We chose to sit in a large shaded patio. Socially distanced and all the staff were masked , including the kitchen help. Live music over cocktails and dinner ..., just a perfect evening!
The pork tostada was excellent!

Incredible experience. The hotel is beautiful, the staff is even better. We traveled with our 4yo daughter and I had her on my lap at the lobby bar, not knowing it is 21yo and older only. The staff was incredibly skilled and kind in re-directing me to another table, bringing additional chairs. I could definitely see how they could've just kicked us out of the bar. We were so impressed by the hospitality. The rooms are incredible and I loved the fridge, hot water kettle, and radio. They had the radio set on a fantastic station and I indulged in a morning hangout session in bed, listening to the

This bar/restaurant is like a beautiful person who is completely devoid of personality and substance. The decor and ambiance is incredible but the actual dining experience was comically bad. The food was bland, except for the Caesar salad, and took 45 minutes to arrive. The bar blew a keg of the beer we ordered and just served us different beers without saying anything. When you take the price into account for all of this I can honestly say that this was one of the worst value dining experiences I can remember. Hopefully they get it figured out because the space is really cool.

First time here was last week with my girls for breakfast. It went great! Service was friendly and food was super fresh and tasty. I got a coffee with baileys and homemade whipped cream, hit the spot sooo good. The weekday breakfast menu seemed a little limited, I got the ricotta toast $12, so I wanted to come back for Sunday brunch.
So I did, with my 2 month old and four year old to meet his six year old cousin and his dad. We didn't have to wait for a table and I ordered the same drink so excited. They brought me an Irish coffee(I can't handle whiskey after having a baby, it's

Its always a treat when you experience the unexpected. We came to Grass Valley on a last-minute trip when my birthday surprise to Bora Bora was cancelled. Gonna be honest, while not Bora Bora (what is?!), this restaurant and its home in the Holbrook Hotel in downtown Grass Valley were a charming and DELICIOUS experience! Kudos to the Chef. I highly recommend this place. The mole sauces and house-crafted gnocchi were divine. My partner's sous vide steak with roasted veg was perfectly done. The outdoor dining is first-rate, delightfully cozy even in winter with fire pits and gas heaters
