Services
Each sensorial material isolates one quality, such as size, volume, width, length, touch, temperature, weight, color, shape or sound. Repetition is encouraged to allow the child to achieve mastery. Basic mathematical foundations of order, sequence, patterns, relationships, quantity and dimension are developed in the Practical Life and Sensorial areas.
Discovery School was founded in 1975 by two women: Jan Schiesser and Barbara Thiele. The first classroom had twelve students in each class. Barbara retired in May of 1984 and the reigns of Directorship were turned over to Janet Wallace, who had volunteered and taught at Discovery School. After a leave of absence to obtain her Masters in Art Therapy, Jan Schiesser, became the Director from 1990 to 2000.
Discovery School, the only Montessori preschool in Topeka, has been educating Topeka preschool children for over 45 years. The Montessori approach encourages the individual development of each child, at his own pace, through his interaction within a carefully prepared environment. Discovery School is training tomorrow's leaders.
If you would like to bring a food that is NOT listed here it must be OKed by the teaching staff before it is brought to school. If your child comes to school with an item that is NOT on this list the teaching staff will make a substitute from our Snack Cabinet. Birthdays will be celebrated in a very special way at Discovery School.
