The willow is a common icon in Japanese culture - from stories and legends to paintings and poetry. We have adopted the name "Yanagi Aikido Dojo", and the image of the Willow Tree, as a constant reminder of the aim of our training. The willlow tree is flexible. In severe winds some harder woods may splinter or break, but the willow sways gracefully with its environment, moving in accord with the elements.
Aikido of Norwalk chief instructor Corey Guilbault ("Gyil-bow") began his training in 1989 while in college at Syracuse University. Upon graduation, he enrolled as a student of Tenshinkan Dojo, headquarters of the Aikido Association of America, under the late F. Toyoda Shihan. Several years later, Mr. Guilbault moved to Brooklyn, New York where he became a student of Shaku Joseph Jarman Sensei at the Jikishinkan Dojo.
Aikido of Norwalk (Yanagi Aikido Dojo) is affiliated with the Zenshinkai Aikido Association, a United-States based organization of dojo committed to developing and maintaining the philosophy that mind and body are one through the training methods of aikido, zen and related budo.

In the all ranks class students of all levels train together. Attention is given to novice students to assure they are learning in a comfortable environment. We cover a range of skills in this class including tumbling techniques, strikes and defenses as well as refining and more deeply exploring breathing, meditation, and integration exercises.
Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art that uses the energy of an attack to neutralize an aggressor. We strive to offer a fun, energetic, yet disciplined environment where children can learn cooperatively to resolve conflicts peacefully. In addition to technique an emphasis is placed on developing skills in self control, mindfulness, respect for others and personal safety.

The teachers are 5th and 4th degree blackbelts – most dojos are lucky to have a 1st or 2nd degree. The classes are small, and the teachers provide a lot of positive and helpful feedback. My teenage daughters took classes here for many years and had a ton of fun. I highly recommend Aikido of Norwalk.

I've been practicing at this dojo for three months and have a background in martial arts, having studied many styles at many schools. This "old school" Aikido Dojo is an absolute gem. The instructors are expert in their art and excellent, devoted teachers who always have a lesson plan prepared. The Dojo is large, well equipped, and well maintained. The classes are small. There is a real camaraderie among students. The schedule is accommodating and there are separate classes for general and weapons training, back to back, for convenience. I recommend this place to anyone, beginner or expert, interested

My 11 year old son has loved the time that he has spent with Corey and Brian learning Aikido. The vibe at the Dojo is great. If you are looking for martial arts program for kids in the Norwalk-Westport-New Canaan area you should definitely give it a try. There is a great balance between philosophy and practice.
