Join Sensei Shawn on a quest to find control, focus, and strength through traditional karate. Camarillo Shotokan has been offering Traditional Shotokan Karate to it's Ventura County residents since 1981. Originally founded by Sensei Victor Young (8th Dan), Camarillo Shotokan has since been passed down to one of Sensei Young's longtime students, Shawn Danaher (5th Dan).
We have devoted karate programs for Adults, Teens, Youth, and even Pre-Karate classes for the youngsters. Whether you've thought about taking up Karate, want to learn Self-Defense, or just simply looking for Structure & Discipline, Camarillo Shotokan is right for you! Sensei Shawn would be happy to give you a tour of the dojo (facility) and answer any questions you may have.

The main difference between these two styles is that Tae Kwon Do focuses more on leg techniques than Shotokan does. Shotokan uses about 50% hands and 50% legs compared to Tae Kwon Do's 70% legs and 30% hands. Also, Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art and Shotokan has its origins in Japan. One need not be in top shape, only the desire to learn and better yourself.
The atmosphere in the dojo is warm, but serious. When you enter the dojo (training hall), you get a feeling this is a serious place, an institution of serious learning. The first thing students do upon entering is to bow at the door and remove their footwear. After changing into their dogi (training uniform), students will bow again as they walk onto the training floor.

Can't say enough good things about this place! Sensei Shawn has an amazing studio, including for kids of all ages. The team teaches the right qualities and skills and does it in the most effective, authentic, friendly, and engaging way possible.
Camarillo Shotokan is the opposite of a "McDojo." There are many long-term students here in the senior classes, and achieving higher ranked belts is truly earned on the basis of acquired skills, knowledge, performance, and experience.
This place has a magic and camaraderie to it that you can see and feel in the smiles of other parents or other students
