At Northern Sun, we offer a unique blend of mainstream medical therapies with naturopathic midwifery care.
The Birth Center at Northern Sun is located in the historic district of Topsham, Maine. The family room allows guests to be present and involved, while the bedroom provides privacy to the mother in labor. The birth tub in the birth suite is available for both laboring and birthing. The kitchen allows families to make their own food during their stay and eat and drink throughout labor.

The Northern Sun Family is excellent at making you feel cared for as a person, not just as a patient. I've been using their services since 2008 for home birthing, infant and maternal care, pediatrician services, and family health. Everything concern we come in with is met with a variety of solutions. Right when COVID began, I was still going to a hospital for my appointments, but when they told me that I had to only have one person in the room when I gave birth, I knew I wanted a home birth with my family. I would never want to go anywhere else for care for my family and self. True healthcare is practiced here, not just trying to manage symptoms with sick care. Issues are adressed holistically focusing on fixing the root cause. The Doctors take the time needed to listen to patients. I had the privilege and honor to witness the birth of my first grandchild on April 3, 2020 at the birth center with my son and beautiful daughter-in-law.
The care, sensitivity, help, encouragement, and suggestions they received from the ladies was overwhelmingly positive. The staff all were wonderful!

Dr. Alicia is kind and caring. She always listens attentively to my health concerns and addresses each one thoughtfully. She does not give up when health issues are persistent and hard to treat. We also had traumatizing post birth care for my wife when she delivered our first child. My wife had a severe postpartum hemorrhage and they waited TEN hours before starting IV fluids and that was only after I demanded it. They also delayed stitching her up for 5 hours. By then she was so swollen they couldn't tell where to put things back together. Yes, the doctor actually said "I think this goes here". During the procedure, my wife hit 10/10 on the pain scale TWICE, even after the 27 hours labor. When we discussed it with Dr. Ackerly later, she blamed my wife's body for not taking the fentanyl
