We believe early education provides a vital foundation for all future learning. We endeavor to instill a deep love of learning in children that will serve them throughout their lives, while preparing them for their next educational experience. Our curriculum is developmentally appropriate and evidence-based with a goal of creating life-long learners who will engage in future challenges with confidence and determination.
A parent cooperative preschool is organized by a group of families with similar philosophies who hire a trained teacher to provide their children with a quality preschool experience. The preschool is administered and maintained by the parents. The parents assist the professional teachers in the classroom on a rotating basis and participate in the educational program of all the children.
We are a parent-run co-op, which means member families perform all jobs necessary to operate the school. We employ two trained teachers who are assisted by parents in the classroom. Each member family also holds a support job or board position, assists with fundraising, assists with facility maintenance and attends required trainings and meetings.
There are no formal worksheets or assigned desks. Our open classroom allows children to move between learning centers, where they may develop and practice different skills. Play is done with intention and parent teachers are there to scaffold the child. Children represent their perception of their world through play.
Our preschool classroom has several areas where the children may be seen busily playing. A large area for building with blocks is in the center of the room. Here you will also find small animals, jewels, action figures, cars, and other interesting objects which capture the attention of preschoolers.

We absolutely love this school! It has been so awesome for my son. Highly recommend it! my son has grown so much in the two years he has attended the preschool class. I'm really proud of him and proud to be a part of such a great program. Putting in the work as a parent teacher is worth every minute. Seeing the look on a kids face when they finally get something, or seeing kid finally come out of their shell is priceless.
It's a wonderful school where kids learn through their play. They learn how to problem solve and resolve conflicts. This quote from the website sums it up nicely.

HPP has been a wonderful experience for my daughter, helping her create a sense of self and community, all at once. Teacher Penny is amazing with the kids...and the parents. Even as a single mom working full time, being a part of this co-op has been completely manageable and so worth it! It is truly a special place.

Our oldest child is in her second year (green class). We were attracted to Hillsboro Parent Preschool + Kindergarten after learning about the nature-based curriculum, the outdoor classroom and the emphasis on fostering independence. As members we’ve appreciated the opportunity to contribute our time and skills to a variety of efforts which make this excellent and affordable education possible for our child and others. We look forward to two more years in this community as our second child will be part of blue class in the fall.

Bottom line: if you are looking for a preschool or Kindergarten that will nurture and educate both your child and your entire family, this is the place! There is a significant amount of work involved to be a member of a co-op school, but our family has loved being able to be so involved in our daughter's classroom and with other families - and we, as parents, have become better parents in the process. Their "Friends Help Friends" and "Learning through Discovery" mottos are truly put into practice!
