John Lampe farmed in Pocahontas County until 1904 when he became the first rural carrier out of the town of Pocahontas. He worked as a clerk in the grocery store owned by Frank E. Hronek. In 1907 John opened a harness shop in partnership with John Hammes where they sold shoes. With the coming of the tractor, the harness shop was eventually phased out.

She passed away peacefully while surrounded by the love of her family. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery, Auburn. She was greeted at home by her two sisters, Lila Finley and Maxine Schelle, and a brother Arnold (Buddy) Lee. Dee went to country school through the eighth grade. Due to her artistic abilities, Dee was offered an opportunity to attend Art School in Sioux City, Iowa.
