Dr. Roland grew up in Martinez and attended Lakeside High School. After graduating from Lakeside, Dr. Roland moved to Atlanta to attend Georgia Tech. She graduated with high honors and received a B.S. in Microbiology. After her undergraduate studies, she attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry.
