A retirement community in Hesston was the fulfillment of the vision of a number of people. In 1957, members of the board of Schowalter Foundation who were helping administer the late J.A. Schowalter estate, a farmer and business man from Halstead who had expressed a desire to donate funds to provide care for retired church workers.

I picked Showalter Villa for my husband because they advertise expertise in memory care. My experience was they did not provide an environment that was good for a severely memory impaired resident. Something in the environment was frightening to my husband and he was frequently upset and afraid. Communication was average at best. Many times my calls were not returned. Staff did not report behavior problems with my husband even after I asked them to do so. Weekends they seem to be understaffed or the staff was inexperienced. I don't know how much of this is COVID related but at a price of about
