St Matthew's School
The SMP's Pre-K classroom provides a secure and nurturing learning environment where the children are engaged in active learning. Discovery and exploration play a role in each lesson and the children are exposed to many new concepts during the year. The alphabet is introduced, non-sequentially, in a developmentally appropriate way and the children are given numerous and varied opportunities to practice the skill of "writing."

Reading readiness activities are incorporated into the curriculum as well; rhyming, alliteration, and the recognition of sound patterns and predictability within a story. As with all the classes, quality children's literature is incorporated into every unit. The SMP's three-year-old classroom provides a secure and nurturing learning environment where the children are able to discover some of those answers on their own.
Services
The mission of St. Matthew's Preschool (SMP), in partnership with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, is to provide preschool students with a vibrant and developmentally appropriate early childhood program that addresses all areas of learning - social, intellectual, spiritual, and physical - in a nurturing and supportive environment.
The SMP two-year-old classroom provides a secure and nurturing learning environment where the children begin to develop their social and emotional skills. Lessons on being part of a group, sharing, taking turns, and making friends are seamlessly woven into all of our "themes." Within the classroom we also provide the two's with daily opportunities to develop their language, listening, and communication skills, as well as a love of literature.
St. Matthew's Preschool is located on the grounds of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in scenic Bedford, NY; the church itself is a historic building built in 1810. Directly out the back door of the preschool, the children have an expansive, newly-renovated playground area with plenty of room to run and explore.
SMP is a proud member of the NAES, National Association of Episcopal Schools. Children attend weekly chapel services which enhance the natural spiritual growth children experience. We embrace universal Christian teachings and warmly welcome children and families without regard for race, ethnic background, or religious beliefs.

We have nothing but good things to say about St. Matthew's Preschool. Our daughter has just entered her second year there, and we continue to be blown away by the nurturing environment, compassionate and experienced teachers, and incredible, close-knit community of parents and families. We know our daughter will continue to grow and thrive here. It is truly a special spot!

We are so happy that our daughter's first school experience has been at St. Matthew's. She has developed a love of learning and fostered her first true friendships with peers. Her teachers have been exceptionally nurturing, and it has been so much fun to watch her grow! St. Matthew's is truly a community school where both parents and their children are made to feel like family.
