We love this karate studio! So much positive learning and attention to details. The students are taught so many life lessons and how to be respectful, build more confidence, and be a good citizen. We love all the summer camps and parent night outs that are offered. My son was at another studio for three years and he was nervous to switch when they closed.

Shotokan Karate Academy focuses on the traditional teachings as taught by the Father of Modern Karate, Gichin Funakoshi and one of his notable students, Hidetaka Nishiyama. Funakoshi's teachings later became known as Shotokan Karatedo. Shotokan Karate originated in Okinawa, a small island south of Japan.
Funakoshi O'Sensei the father of Shotokan Karate-Do, perhaps the most widely known style of karate and is attributed as being the "father of modern karate". In 1922, Funakoshi introduced Shotokan Karate to Japan and the world, standardizing many of the forms that we practice today for teaching in elementary school, high school, and college levels.
This is the most elementary kata practiced at SKA. Developed by Master Funakoshi's son, Gigo, Taikyoku helps new students learn basic kata principles. Created relatively recently, the Heians were originally called Pinan from the Okinawan pronunciation of the Chinese word for safety. When introduced to Japan, Master Funakoshi opted to use the Japanese pronunciation Heian.
A typical class at our dojo consists of Kihon (basic techniques - blocks, punches, kicks, and footwork), Kata (forms- pre-arranged series of techniques designed to teach specific concepts and applications), Kumite (sparring - both free sparring and sparring with specific constraints, always with the safety of the student of the utmost concern), and Fitness & Flexiblity (strength, endurance, and mobility exercises to assist in the development of overall karate skills).
This program combines many of the arts Sensei Ty accrued over the years such as Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Judo, Hapkido, Sambo and Wrestling. The main focus is self defense. You will learn how to throw or take down an opponent, be in control of many situations and positions.
Through the curriculum, you will learn how to defend yourself against a larger and stronger opponent with throws, joint locks, chokes, submissions and much more!

My son is 6 and has tried all different sports, and we finally found karate. He has enjoyed going to karate and being able to celebrate his accomplishments with his class mates. Sensai Diaz is as concerned with my son's growth and progress as we are and is very involved in letting me know what we can do to help him grow. If you have ever thought of hanging you children try karate Shotokan Karate Academy is the best place to be!

Two of my kids started karate here about 8 months ago. They have learned so much and really enjoy going to karate and learning from Sensei Diaz. Jordan was so good to work with us during the first few months of the COVID pandemic and worked hard to get kids back in the dojo safely.
This is my first experience with karate so there has been a learning curve with what is required of us and when but that is expected.

My son has been learning from Sensei Diaz for a few years now. He is patient, caring and has really helped my son progress in not just karate but life. The skills that he instills in his kids are life lessons that are important and will be invaluable for all of them. My son gives him 5 stars and I echo that.

We love Shotokan Karate! Sensei Diaz takes the time to talk to me about my child and what our goals are. It is a great blend of discipline, kindness, mat chat to teach life lessons like focus and anti bullying, etc. It is also really fairly priced and doesn't nickle and dime you. You don't pay extra for strips or belt tests, no extra belts or uniforms etc. We are so glad we found this.

My 5 year old son and I both take classes from Sensei Diaz. He is very thoughtful about what he teaches, and invites us to question what we learn because we all grow together when we work towards answering those questions. I have always wanted to learn traditional karate, and my experience here has been great.
5 year old: I like punching, and kicking. And bowing, and saying osu. I like playing Sensei's karate games in glass too.
