The Uniontown Karate Club is a member of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), which was founded by one of the men who was instrumental in first bringing karate to the United States in the early 1960s. The ISKF is a non-profit organization that seeks to promulgate traditional Japanese karate-do throughout the world.
The following is a very brief history of karate. There are a lot of good references out there providing much more detail, contact us if you would like some recommendations. Okinawa is the main island of the Ryukyu Island chain, which is scattered like stepping stones southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan in the East China Sea.
Training in karate teaches us not only self-defense but, to respect others as well as ourselves. We train our body to be strong, and our mind and spirit to be patient, in order to become the best human beings we can be. Karate is a spiritual endeavor, a way to develop a person as an individual. Everything we learn in the dojo, or training hall, should be applied to everyday life.
The benefits of karate practice are myriad. Physically it enhances strength, coordination, stamina, balance and flexibility. It is well documented that regular exercise can improve both the quality and longevity of your life and that it makes people feel happier and more alert. There is also evidence that exercise can help cognitive brain function.

This club has been in Uniontown for nearly 50 years, and it shows in the excellent instruction and facilities. The dojo is huge, immaculate, and well-equipped, even including one makiwara for adults and a short version for children. The instructors know what they're doing and are good, friendly people.
