Portsmouth Nursery School is a private, non-profit organization licensed annually by Rhode Island DCYF. Our Head Teacher holds an Early Childhood Teaching Certificate from the Rhode Island Department of Education. We are not religiously affiliated with the Portsmouth United Methodist Church. PNS opened in 1955 as a kindergarten program before kindergarten was mandatory.

Since the opening of public school kindergarten in 1970, we have devoted ourselves exclusively to the education of three and four year old children. Portsmouth Nursery School does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, color, creed, ethnic or national origin for admissions, educational policies, hiring practices, or any of its school practices.
Services
In accordance to the RI Early Learning & Development Standards, our two-day program consists of several hands-on activities throughout the day to promote independence and basic skills. During our circle time, pre-reading skills are introduced through large group stories, songs, and games.

One letter of the alphabet is introduced each week during circle, and projects during center time are designed to reinforce the recognition and formation of the letter.Beginning letter sounds are emphasized throughout the year in names, reading, and themes to begin phonetic awareness. Math, science, cooking, and art projects are also planned throughout the year to create a well-rounded experience for the young learner.
Forms will be mailed to parents of children who are currently enrolled in the T/TH class who will be returning for the next years MWF class. Parents of any child currently enrolled in the MWF class, who may be returning for the next school year. Parents of children currently attending PNS who have siblings eligible for the following school year.
Please do not bring your child to school earlier than the opening time of 8:30 AM. The doors will be locked before this time. We would greatly appreciate it if all children were in the classroom by the start of circle time. Late arrival to school can be disruptive. Note that you are responsible for your child and his/her siblings until you leave the classroom.
