When I became a foster parent in 2005, I came into the role with so many assumptions about children and families living in poverty. Like many of us that spend years volunteering and mentoring within our respective communities, I hadn't realized the interconnectivity of the systems until those agencies became part of both my personal and professional life.
Currently over 2,000 young people aged 12-22 are detained in youth detention centers throughout the state of Georgia. The majority of these youth are from lower socioeconomic communities in Georgia, and struggle with having their physical and mental health needs addressed. Georgia ranks 47 out of 50 states when it comes to for access to mental health care, resources and insurance.
Showcase Group has been able to connect justice involved youth to a number of resources due to our connection pathways of mental health, education, employment, and residential support. SG services 200 youth and families annually in the juvenile justice system. 90% were attending school or a GED program or had completed high school or a GED program at discharge.
Showcase Group provides support to at-risk youth and their families by implementing psychosocial services, such as case management and therapy by trained professionals. Our social and emotional training programs also support this population in making better choices as a result of gaining a higher level of diverse, culturally relevant social emotional intelligence (SEL) methods for young adult healthy living.
