The CNYAHEC service area is home to 24 hospitals located in predominantly rural areas serving a total regional population of over 1.62 million people. There are numerous geographic pockets of federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) within the CNYAHEC region, specifically in the areas of primary health care, mental health care, and dental health care.

As an AHEC Scholar, you can set yourself apart in an ever-changing and increasingly competitive healthcare system with a nationally recognized program. AHEC Scholars is a two-year program for health professions students interested in getting hands-on experience and learning about topics that affect communities.
Live and learn about careers in exercise and sport sciences, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation, speech-language pathology, and more on the beautiful Ithaca College campus, located on Ithaca's South Hill overlooking Cayuga Lake. This five-day experience is for Central New York students entering 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.
There aren't enough healthcare providers in rural New York, as well as the rural United States, to serve not only our current population but the emerging aging population as well. Recruiting and retaining providers in rural communities is exceedingly difficult. Numerous studies demonstrate that providers tend to practice in locations in which they have been trained, in part or whole.
