Dr. Mary Alice grew up right here in Mauldin, SC and was a proud graduate of Mauldin High School. After leaving Mauldin, she made a stop in Columbia, SC to receive her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of South Carolina, and in Charleston, SC to obtain a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina.
Nerve treatments on primary teeth are not the same as root canals on permanent teeth and we are trained to perform these "baby" root canals on young patients. We'll hold your child's hand every step of the way. The nerve of the tooth is also called pulp tissue. When bacteria from a cavity penetrates into the pulp tissue, it becomes necessary to remove a portion of the pulp in order to prevent further pain and infection.
We have missed all of you so much and we are so excited to get back to the office! Things will be a little different and we ask that you are patient with us as we work hard to get everyone scheduled and taken care of as quickly and safely as possible. If you had an appointment scheduled, we will be reaching out to you, so you do not need to call our office unless you are experiencing pain and/or discomfort.

Pediatric dentists specialize in treating the unique needs of children. They have two to three additional years of training to learn more about treating children. They also focus more attention on educating patients and parents about preventative care to help children avoid complications such as tooth decay, infection, speech problems, and cosmetic issues.

We absolutely ADORE Dr. Mary Alice and her entire team! Our youngest son has had fillings and teeth extracted by her, and our oldest had fillings today. It was a long process, as he is autistic and went into… overload, and Dr. Mary Alice was so patient. Hands down THE BEST pediatric dentist we’ve ever been to! Whatever our kids choose to watch, the staff and Dr. always talks to them about that show/movie. Our youngest chose Frozen and the assistants were… explaining to her how they were “cleaning the sugar bugs”. They all go above and beyond to explain and help them not be nervous! Dr. Mary Alice is hands down, the best pediatric dentist out there. We just moved from out of state and my son was struggling with a medical condition relating to his dental work. I had taken him to 3 other dentists prior to Maverick and was so discouraged at the treatments suggested and at his worsening condition. I am absolutely blown away by this whole dental team! After a bad experience with our old dentist we decided to try a new one! Let me tell you best decision ever! Everyone is so kind and patient! I"ve been cautious about the right pediatric dentistry to care for my sons dental care and I can say, after the first initial visit that I felt such calm and experienced energy in the building that I can tell my son did also. Maverick smiles did not disappoint! Iām so glad that I chose Dr. Mary Alice Hughes as my childrenās dentist. By far the best place to go. My son is scared of doctors and the dentist. Terrified. They have always made him feel so comfortable and safe and he has loved going. Dr. Mary Alice does an outstanding job with interacting and keeping them calm along with everyone else. Would recommend them to everyone. The entire staff is always so nice and treats you like family. I’m so glad we found them. It’s a little drive but worth it completely to me for my son to feel comfortable and safe.

Our kids have been to multiple āpediatricā dentists with no positive feedback to give. We kept searching until we found Dr. Mary Alice. We will search no further. To say she has been awesome with my babies is an understatement. My 5 year old has sensory issues and has always hated the dentist. My 4 year old is just very shy and scared of everything. My son just had his first dentist appointment here yesterday! He is a happy 3 year old little boy. He is also autistic and nonverbal. With that being said doctors visits are extremely challenging for us; some… are nearly impossible. I am so thankful we were referred here! The entire staff was outstanding.
