Services
The Thornton Funeral Home was founded in 1967 by Harry Wendell and Gertrude Lewis Thornton. Working together they had a vision to continue a career in which Wendell had started in 1947 at the former Johnson Funeral Home. Renovating of the former Upshur Lewis residence began in 1967 and was transformed into the present funeral home.
Staff members of Thornton Funeral Home & Cremation Services are caring and experienced professionals who understand that each family is unique and has personal requests and traditions. These requests and traditions are of utmost importance to our staff of funeral service professionals. Please feel free to contact any of our staff by calling (757) 665-5939 or contact them by email below.
Our facilities are located in historic Parksley, VA. on the corner of Chadbourne Street and Jones Avenue. Over the years the building has been completely renovated and remodeled to accommodate the growing business. In 1979 a chapel was added with additional seating for 100. The interior, a traditional colonial atmosphere, is done in soothing shades of rose and greens with Chippendale furnishings and the most modern equipment.
Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.
Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress. Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice.

Thornton Funeral Home was very compassionate and caring during the loss of my husband. The staff was very knowledgeable and detail oriented. They helped our family make decisions and offered a variety of services. I have already begun working with Thornton Funeral Home to plan my future service. With their help and caring attitude, a very difficult time was made just a little easier.

The Thornton family made us feel very welcome and at home. They were very kind. My mother died during this COVID-19 pandemic, and it made the process very challenging since her grandchildren are in different places around the country. Sarah was terrific and understanding of our situation. They were quick to reply to all of our questions and concerns, and I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of funeral services.

Thornton Funeral Home has been serving our community for three generations with compassion and professional excellence. Recently they assisted me to plan the service for my Mother and guided me through the various options. Their compassion and attention to detail helped to make this most stressful time as comfortable as possible

They were so kind and attentive! Anytime I called they were there! If they couldn’t be reached at some time or another, the message was sent and Carl would call!
It made a very painful experience for me go smoothly! I buried both my parents at the same time, since the Eastern Shore was where they were born and raised!
Such wonderful care!
I can’t express my deepest gratitude from our family!
With Deepest Gratitude,
Kim Jones
