The Open Sky School of Martial Arts teaches martial arts that develop the use of ki (Chinese: chi) to promote inner awareness, sensitivity to others, and self-defense ability, rather than the use of muscular strength alone. Classes in both arts are excellent physical exercise for students of all levels.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art famed for its peaceful philosophy, an appropriate art for our times. Tai chi is a slower-paced, deeply internal study that reinforces students' understanding of the foundation principles of martial arts, self-healing, and body-alignment, and is a wonderful meditative study for adults of all ages.

Services
Open Sky Martial Arts grounds its practice and community values in the philosophies of Aikido and Chen style Tai Chi. At Open Sky, inclusivity is fundamental to these practices. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, wrote "Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, a body that can be trained in some manner, a suitable path to follow."
Below we offer some video and written resources for our students working to memorize forms or prepare for tests. Open Sky is lucky to have its instruction heavily influenced by two main aikido weapons systems: that of Saito Sensei (Iwama style) and Chiba Sensei (Birankai, former USAF West). Our Chief Instructor, Steve Kaufman Shihan, gained direct knowledge of both systems from these students of the founder of aikido over a number of years.
We are contacting those who have already signed up for the seminar and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Required Waiver: Please fill in and mail the required waiver (see below) in advance or at the door. To pay by mail: Include credit card information along with your practice waiver (see above).
Please contact us to join this group! Everyone is always welcome to watch any class at our school without an appointment. Given the pandemic, our classes are either outdoors or on zoom; videos are currently the best way to see what practice at our school is like. We encourage prospective students (or parents of prospective students) to make appointments to visit our school, speak to our chief instructor, and watch a class.
