Differing from other area schools, we offer a single Team Training class for adults and teens, and a feeder class for kids, ages 6 and up. We are a nonprofit organization whose mandate is to achieve excellence in a martial arts skill set delivered through an ongoing interaction with our instructors in Japan.
We choose the term "team training" to emphasize the importance of the individual student's relevance to a team momentum in learning AS A GROUP in which an individual's regular attendance, determination, and progress drives the group average. Your classes will be smaller at Ligo Dojo, you'll work with the same students class after class, you'll have the regular attention of your teacher, and you'll benefit in terms.

Team Training simply means that we teach to the class average AND ensure that the class average is always moving forward. In order to do so, we are also teaching the students how to hold their own on a team that depends on them to advance. The result is that the students will become the best that they can be as aided by a unified group that is expected to set that same success-energy role model.
Our Kids Class currently meets two times per week, and kids should not join who can't come to both classes, every week, most of the time. At Ligo Dojo, we will teach your child authentic karate.
One of the greatest moments for us is when kids turn 12 or 13 and move up into our Team Training class and realize that their kids class has adequately prepared them for what the adults and teens do in class, and our adults and teens perform at a very high level.Kids have fun and feel accomplishment, but karate class is not recreation or playtime.

In order to succeed at Team Training, students must attend the vast majority of the classes. If a new potential student could never attend on Saturdays, for example, it would be conceivably possible for them to keep up, but that student would be disadvantaged. Can you attend weeknights and Saturdays except when you're traveling, on the other hand?
Kyokushin Karate is a style of Japanese Karate founded by Mas Oyama. Sensei Ligo was a personal, residential student of Mas Oyama in 1990 and 1991, and he holds one of only 3 certificates ever issued by Mas Oyama to Westerners for his famed Young Lions Uchi Deshi program, Sensei Ligo having completed 2 years of the grueling 3-year program before any foreigner had ever graduated.
At 46 and against all odds, Sensei Ligo took 6th place in Kyokushin-kan's World Open Kata Tournament in Japan in May of 2017. At the same time the student body at Ligo Dojo was reaching a level of maturity (in training) that has facilitated a seismic shift.
A dojo, in its purest sense, is a place where an instructor develops his/her art, and those students who can, show their determination, and follow along, AND the instructor, moved by the students' determination, then gives his/her students the best that he has to offer.

You won’t find a more dedicated dojo to train with. Sensei Ligo has put his heart and soul into creating a dojo with the same spirit as his dojo in Japan and strives to offer the best teaching to his students. The atmosphere is welcoming and also emphasizes the importance of training to be stronger. I’d train every night if my schedule allowed for it!

The Ligo Dojo has been an excellent experience for my son and his friends. Sensei Ligo's traditional budo style is unique in the U.S., and a fantastic way to develop skill, strength, spirit, and self discipline in karate. I also train with the parent program which is another great program for families!

Nearly 2 years after stepping into Ligo Dojo, I remain excited and hungry to continue training. Sensei Ligo is a dedicated martial artist, an excellent teacher, and the technical director for Kyokushinkan Karate in the United States. Unequivocally, I am a better person for practicing this art, and you may discover the same after contributing to the dojo.

My elementary aged son currently trains at Ligo Dojo in Chapel HIll and loves it! He took karate at another dojo prior to our move to Chapel HIll and I can tell you there is no comparison. They are very serious about instruction, but value effort and good attitude as the most important aspect of training. My son has learned more -- and appreciated the experience more -- in 4 months at Ligo Dojo than he had after a year at our previous dojo. If you are looking for a serious place to train with dedicated instructors (Amy is the best!), I would recommend you give Ligo Dojo a try.

I know this may sound like an exaggeration, but training and Ligo Dojo literally saved my life. Under the dedicated leadership of Sensei Ligo; training at Ligo Dojo opened my eyes to the immense potential we have both as individuals and as a group. We are challenged through strict adherence to Kyokushin Kan etiquette/ training as the Japanese do and through this method we find our own inner strength as we battle through learning kata, correct stances, fighting techniques and in the end we find we are supporting each other as the dojo training spirit gets stronger and stronger.
