UPLIFT: Mental Health Support, formerly Recovery Inc. of Kentucky, is a non-profit organization. Recovery Inc. of Kentucky was established in the early 1950s to offer anyone suffering from mental or emotional distress the opportunity to learn the Recovery method and receive the support of fellow sufferers.
The Recovery cognitive behavioral therapy program used by Uplift teaches us that our thoughts can be changed. Secure thoughts allow us to be in control of our health. Our feelings follow our thoughts, so spotting insecure thoughts prevents unpleasant feelings and symptoms, often including anxiety and distress.
Uplift uses the Recovery self-help cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by Dr. Abraham Low, M.D., which provides a road map to improving mental health using Recovery tools. Each meeting is peer-led by a long-time member of the group who has walked the path of mental health and provides guidance and support to participants.
When I came into Recovery, my main symptoms were fatigue, sleeplessness, and depression. What bothered me most was the fear I had of harming myself or others. Every minister I consulted about this told me I had no reason to feel guilty just because I had these thoughts and that the only sin would be to act on the thoughts.
