Bret is the first 2nd generation winemaker in Colorado, and he has been working in the wine industry since 1990. After several years of learning the basics of wine making, he took over the wine making responsibilities in 2000, as well as the day to day operations of Stoney Mesa and Ptarmigan Vineyards.
Although Bret has no formal training, he strives for perfection in every wine. Winemaking is a very tedious task. Being patient and trying new things is a huge part of winemaking. Sometimes a mistake can be made and it will ruin the entire batch and then sometimes those mistakes turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

One of Colorado's oldest wineries, Stoney Mesa Winery was established in 1989 by the Neal family with the purchase of a 50 acre farm in Cedaredge, Colorado. Having roots in Western Colorado, they had began to notice a burgeoning wine industry in the fruit growing areas of Colorado. Having a love of wine and the area, in 1990 the first vines were planted and the roots of Stoney Mesa Winery took hold.
Sustainable agriculture is a balance between nature and crop survival. We do only what is necessary to maintain a healthy farm with little impact on the environment. Stoney Mesa was named for the terrain and geology of the original farm in Cedaredge, CO. We believe that great wine is a reflection of the vineyards care.
Small scale production with state of the art custom built equipment. With many new additions to the operation, we have constructed a perimium winery in the heart of Colorado wine counry. Stoney Mesa's winemaker and wine grape growers everywhere are in agreement when they express The wine begins in the vineyard.
Because alcohol is a regulated product, every state has it's own laws on importation. This makes shipping wine a complicated business. If you are really interested in the complications, go here and see why we chose this route Wine Institute Website. Note: From June through August, we don't recommend shipping when temperatures are very hot.
The ARTCoop is a group of local artists that came together led by our very own Shari Burgess to utilize a space in the tasting room that was being ignored. They transformed the space into a beautiful display of local artists talent. Cards, jewlery, photography, painting, wood turning and metal art are on display and are available for purchase.

My wife and I were on a road trip through the area and discovered this winery. We thoroughly enjoyed the wines and the host/owner (Bret Neal) had lots to talk about and wines to enjoy! We left with a lot of wine and are returning this week and will leave with more wine! I highly recommend this winery and am sure you'll find something that tickles your fancy.
By all means, go!

During the summer of 2012, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place while on a road trip to Denver. A last second whim cause by a sign on the road sent us up the driveway to taste some of their wines. This was the very first time we had ever done a wine tasting... The winemaker was displeased with one of the wines, so he was practically giving it away @ $3/bottle! What a steal! We ended up leaving with case of wine, including a few different bottles, one of which was a delicious port wine (which we are saving for a special occasion.)
