So, after watching the Cubbies get killed at Great American Park, we were too tired to drive all the way from Cincinnati to Chicago and elected to stop in Batesville - a good hour east of Indianapolis. We decided against the Interstate motels and instead headed into the town of Batesville looking for a mid-19th century renovated hotel called The Sherman.
The Sherman Biergarten is fashioned after German biergartens, offering open air live entertainment, food, drinks and a delightful place to hang out unhurried with friends or family. The Bier Hall is connected to the Biergarten and is the newest addition to The Sherman. The unique "elegant-industrial" ambiance with pool tables, dartboards, lots of beers and crafty cocktails also hosts live entertainment and includes an indoor restaurant.
A 165-year-old inn and restaurant totally modernized with updated boutique guest rooms, the beautifully renovated Circa 1852 Restaurant, Boehringer Hall Banquet Room, Hillenbrand Room, the new Black Forest Bar, the Biergarten and the Bier Hall are testament to big dreams, great food and remarkable memories being made every day.
We can take care of everything from arranging the tables to designing the centerpieces, or bring your own decorations and we'll help you set up. The Sherman provides choices that will fit your occasion and supplies all the options for making your gathering outstanding and memorable. The Boehringer Hall comes equipped with two large flat screen TVs for presentations, movies, or the entertainment of your choice.
Yes, you can use the Circa 1852 Restaurant for your event and even use the Rhine Room for a reception area. This beautiful room has been a dining area for over 160 years, dating back to the time of Lincoln. Unique in all respects, the Circa 1852 Room will fascinate your guests with its historic classic style that is clean and fresh from its recent renovations.

Meh, honestly it was ok, but only that. My old fashioned i orders was watered down severely. I shared the potato cakes and they are drenched in oil. They tasted like carnival/fair food. I then received the “Best Wurst Platter” the food was enjoyable. I don’t think I would go out of my way to come back, but it is a good place to meet with family.

Ordered the wurst platter and 2/3 sausages were good. The sauerkraut left a little to be desired. The old fashioned I ordered wasn’t bad, but was a little watery, on par with most bar/restaurant mixed drinks.

Such a wonderful experience and food in here. We learned about the history of the building and some actually got tour of the copper bar and the rooms upstairs. Very great waiting staff!

I love this place! Room is beautifully updated, clean, and oh so comfortable, especially the bed. The free to-go breakfast is an interesting concept, and a delicious one. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent, and the Black Forest Bar is beautiful, comfortable, and prices are not outrageous. I will definitely stay here again.

Just had brunch. This was our first time visiting, and it was wonderful. Our server, Kayla, did a great job! My husband and I are looking forward to coming back and staying in one of the hotel rooms.

The cuisine and service are tops. The ambiance is excellent. Well worth the time. The new owners have done a wonderful job of remodeling, without losing the original Bavarian charm.

Rooms are nice. Walls are thin, you can hear anyone out in the halls. However, the hotel staff is very hospitable and responsive. Would stay here again, but would bring some noise cancelling headphones next time. The restaurant lives up to the hype, and there was a hell of a party in the biergarten.

Great location if desiring to be in the heart of Batesville. The staff is super accommodating. The room was not the most sound proof of locations but ear buds were provided free of charge. The bathroom was lovely and the hot water and pressure perfect.

We stopped in for dinner and couldn't have been more pleased. Had the potato pancake appetizer which was delicious. Our salads were a combo of crisp mixed greens, tomatoes and cucumbers with a very tasty ranch dressing. My wife got the rib eye which was perfectly prepared and outstanding. My pork loin was terrific as well. Great food and service made for a wonderful meal.

The hotel accommodations were fantastic, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and the staff was beyond hospitable. For example, there was a night that I was running late and ordered food shortly after 8 PM, instead of saying, “kitchen closed” the server checked to see if there was anything they could quickly bring out. I was so pleased (and certainly no one had to do that!). I also took a work colleague there for dinner one night – and your Caesar Salad has always been my favorites, but it wasn’t on the menu – but the kitchen was able to prepare it. Things like this made took my stay from

We planned a cycling team ride to St Leon and decided to make it a local adventure by staying at Sherman. Dinner and drinks were great addition to our Sherman visit. The staff and attention to details at this local gem were really asset to our stay. Example... our waiter helped me join VIP app to enable me to get my free pretzel... then later when we returned to bar, she left her dinner to take our drink orders. The front desk permitted us a late checkout... and the place is warm and charming. The food was so hot... we had to wait to eat. The pretzel was great and had an assortment of mustard

The atmosphere is a really cool older German hotel/restaurant. The food was pretty good but a little on the pricey side. I had the spinach bacon salad and the dressing was amazing. Both kids had the cheeseburger on a pretzel bun and both devoured it. Overall a pretty cool placE to stop on a road trip not too far for 74.

I stayed here for business and the business chose this hotel establishment. It is centrally located in town. Parking is free in the lot across from hotel.

It is quaint and small. The rooms have been updated witH ikea furniture and finishings. The room I had was small but utilitarian. It was clean but no elevator in entire building.

Breakfast is traditional continental. The entire place is German themed although when I got there the bars and resto were not open.

Front desk staff was a young man from the Philippines who was very professional and courteous.

Flew into Batesville for a day to visit a client, decided to stay at the Sherman. Have to tell you my expectations were very low as I figured "I'm in middle of Indiana, how good can this be?"

Well, to start, the hotel itself is small yet historic and completely remodeled. Room is small yet upgraded and i really enjoyed the shower water pressure. The bar has incredibly affordable prices (compared to la) but equally as tasty.

The restaurant, despite poor reviews from what seems like folks with either unrealistic expectations or simply a poor palette, is incredible. Got the onion

Not really that good...
Ambiance: the restaurant has a weird atmosphere. When we went, it was pretty empty but there was no music and it felt kind of awkwardly empty. Really cool German decor and very clean feeling, however. Also the bathrooms were nice!
Food: The Bavarian pretzel was tasty! Highly recommend it! However, the stroganoff looked like it had been under a heat lamp for a long time and wasn't very good. The rest of our food was also just okay. The food is the main reason for the 3 star review.
Service: Everyone was super friendly and ready to help!! I really enjoyed the service

Delicious food. We had the Triple Starter with meatballs (with yummy mushrooms and creamy sauce), potato skins (with bacon jam), and fried provolone (duh). Honey had the German Meatloaf. It was amazingly tender and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were creamy, buttery goodness. I had the Chicken Marsala with German fried potatoes and lemony asparagus. All yum.
Cool historic place. Good service.
Highly recommend.

This is a neat German restaurant located in downtown Batesville(!). The outside retains the old German architecture/charm, but the inside has received a complete makeover. The bar especially looks amazing. This would be a good place to come on a Friday or Saturday night (if I lived closerl for dinner and drinks.

The food is very good, and in typical German fashion, plentiful. There are a lot of German classics (bratwurst, schnitzel) as well as American dishes (hamburgers, pasta, etc.).

I stopped in here with a friend on the way back from Indianapolis. I suggested it as I have eaten here before, even though it was years ago. We were seated right away and ordered drinks (okay I had water) and ordered a meal. I ordered the meatloaf which I might say was some of the best I have had.

The way the meal was presented I would have thought we were at a 5 star restaurant or somewhere trying to get a Michelin star. Prices are more than cheap fast food, but not as bad as a Michelin Star place. Even still I was pleasantly surprised.

Then I ordered the Cheesecake. Let me say that

We ate lunch here yesterday, great German decor, yummy food, friendly staff, and beautiful bathrooms! We are vegan and enjoyed a great salad, with beets, and some German potatoes. Thank for having us!
Left my purse, because of the wedding could not go back. Trusted it in their care for the night. Picked it up safe and sounds. Thanks for caring so much!
