Adam Kaufman Psychotherapy
Conveniently located in Downtown San Francisco, I offer mindfulness-based talk therapy for individuals and couples. Many of my clients are young professionals with anxiety, relationship/dating challenges, work-life balance struggles, and difficulties figuring out purpose/life-direction. I believe in the uniqueness of every individual, and our shared humanity; our sessions together offer an opportunity for deep self-reflection and growth.

I've spent over two decades studying psychology, eastern spiritual traditions, and various personal growth modalities. I spent time in India, Nepal, and Tibet studying Buddhism and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Bangladesh in Thailand. After receiving my Masters in Social Work from NYU I started my career working in community mental health with people with severe mental illness as well as former felons.
Services
I've been a psychotherapist for over ten years. I was trained in a variety of techniques while doing graduate work at NYU, and I draw upon my knowledge of psychology, life coaching, and meditation traditions to help people move forward on their unique life paths. Unlike the stereotypical therapist who only listens and nods his head while you tell him about your childhood, my style is engaged and focused on what you need now.
Anxiety is the experience of fear or discomfort in response to things real or imagined. Life presents all sorts of stressors. Anxiety occurs when it feels difficult to be with or relax with these stressors or worries. Anxiety often manifests as a fear of what's yet to come. Anxiety often occurs as worry about everyday situations.
When we think of relationship issues, most of us immediately think of dating or romantic connections. However, I define relationship issues as challenges one might face in any sort of human connection. Many people have a difficult time effectively connecting with friends, family members, and/or romantic partners.
Couples counseling (also called "couples therapy") can help improve your relationship in a wide range of situations and circumstances. Whether you're having disagreements on how to move forward in your relationship, are coping with the aftermath of cheating, or finding it difficult to communicate, we can create a space of honest dialogue.
I'm often asked by clients and friends to define mindfulness. The technical definition is something like, "the process of becoming present to what's happening without judgment". By pausing to notice what's happening - body sensations, breath, thoughts, feelings, what one sees, what one hears, etc. - one is able to rest in a peaceful state; it's almost like watching a movie.

We all need therapy, but finding the right therapist can be a challenge. Adam Kaufman is a great listener with an open heart. Some people are passive listeners, some are active, Adam is an active listener. Also, Adam supported our process with some really useful and unique exercises that has helped me reflect more deeply, helping me discover some really impactful insights.
