Services
The Downeast School of Massage was established in 1981 for the purpose of training individuals in the health professional career field of Massage Therapy. DSM began with the founder-director, Nancy Dail, and four determined students. As the years have passed, the school has grown with its graduates and the profession.
Science is the foundation of your art. The development of your palpation skills and the technique utilized is based on the structure. Pehr Hendrik Ling (1776-1839), the founder of the Swedish system of medical gymnastics, believed that a thorough knowledge of the human body and nature's laws was a minimum for an intelligent understanding of physical education.
Although DSM has a strong foundation in the sciences, the program goes well beyond science and teaches the student a wide variety of practical experiences. Massage courses begin with a comprehensive presentation of therapeutic massage theory and technique.
Integration with other courses during the program enables the student to give a massage treatment designed for the individual, based on the structure, medical history, postural assessment, and problem at hand.Self-care classes teach the student lessons in stretching, boundaries, communication skills, and self-awareness for physical and emotional needs during school and in practice.

Students must be a minimum of 18 years of age with a high school degree or equivalent; no other age limits or age discrimination. Students must receive a professional massage before acceptance to the program. Students should be in good physical and mental health and be of high moral character.
Students are accepted according to available space, without regard to gender, color, creed, race, religion, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, or disability.We welcome prospective students to make an appointment to visit the school. It is strongly suggested that each individual interested in the school attend one of DSM's frequent open houses.

DSM offers continuing education in order to present a holistic approach to learning. Shiatsu, Sports Massage, Polarity, and Centering Techniques for Body/Mind are available to take in combination with a program choice or separately from the core at a later date. Courses are individually priced according to length, design, and purpose.

The Downeast School of Massage is one of the few schools in the country still taught and run by its founder. Nancy Dale, with over forty years' experience as a massage therapist, educator and director, and mentor, is also the co- author of several textbooks, including the "Manual of Kinesiology," which is used in class.
During my full time year with them as a student, I was grateful for the expert teaching of successful leaders in the industry, an organized curriculum and an overall environment of integrity, safety, healing and professionalism.

I am privileged to have known the owner of The Downeast School of Massage, Nancy Dail, for over 30 years. Maine is so lucky to have one of the great "legacy" school of massage, right there in a beautiful setting in Waldoboro, Maine. They built their school on their land, right on a lovely pond. It is an incredible place to learn with great, caring teachers, small classes with close, careful supervision, an extremely refined curriculum, and administered by one of greatest pioneers in our field, Nancy Dail! Therapists learn anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, self-care, ethics, and so much more. I have been a client at DSM for many years and have always found the students friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and skillful. Along with excellent and expert instructors the school is located in just a beautiful serene setting. Treatment of clients is always professional, courteous and helpful. These attributes makes a massage at DSM a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience.

The Downeast School of Massage gave me a solid foundation in bodywork, for which I am most appreciative. The teachers were wonderful, helpful, and wise; they instilled confidence in my capable hands and inspired me to think outside the proverbial "box." Attending DSM was one of the best experiences of my life.
