Skin examinations are one aspect of screening used to detect and diagnose diseases of the skin, hair and nails. Typically, a full body skin exam can be done in about 10 minutes and should be done at least once per year. In some people, skin exams are recommended more frequently depending on your skin type, immune status, family history, and prior medical history.
Acne is a disease of the follicular unit caused by many factors, including hormones and inflammation. It affects many people differently and can be as unique as your own skin composition. Acne often affects the face and upper trunk. Acne can affect newborns and infants but usually begins at puberty.
Actinic Keratosis: A rough red scaly patch that results from chronic sun damage (also known as 'Solar Keratosis'). Without treatment, these lesions may eventually develop into Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Treatment is recommended for Solar Keratosis. Angioma: A red spot that is composed of dilated blood vessels.
Eczema is another term for a skin rash or dermatitis. Many cases start out very itchy with a weeping rash or even blisters, which most likely led to the name eczema. The word eczema comes from the Greek word ekzein, meaning 'to boil out.' Eczema may begin in infancy or the first rash may not appear until you are an adult.
Psoriasis is a common, chronic, non-contagious skin condition characterized by clearly defined red scaling plaques that come and go. Most people have isolated plaques on their elbows, knees, groin, or scalp but it can affect nearly all of your skin. The lesions are typically very persistent without treatment.
