The WNC IPA was founded by a small group of Asheville-area physicians under the leadership of Dr. Keith Campbell. The team identified the need for privately-owned physicians to work together to remain strong, independent and flourish in Western North Carolina's competitive healthcare landscape. Before long, more than seventy family practice, internal medicine and pediatric physicians located joined the organization.

The IPA runs periodic testimonial-style print advertisements to promote the advantages of working with independent practices to prospective patients and members.
