My approach to patient care is rather simple, listen; engage; and educate. Simply put, I believe that a well-informed patient is the best patient and has the best chance to return to top form. As a prior collegiate football player and life-long athlete, I understand the importance of getting people back to the activities they love.
I am a board certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in surgery of the shoulder and knee. I utilize minimally invasive techniques to treat rotator cuffs, meniscus tears, ACL injuries, and many more. I perform total joint replacements of the shoulder and knee including the less invasive partial replacements.

I saw Dr. Purchase over the course of six months as I was healing from a broken collarbone injury... and I have to say, this guy is great!
His staff is super friendly and will really do their best to accommodate their patient's schedules. Dr. Purchase himself is a really nice guy that I would always look forward to meeting with and chatting with. He is very clear with his information and always very knowledgable about potential issues and suggested treatments. I definitely pushed back when he suggested physical therapy, but I'm so so SO glad I went through with it!
Such a great doctor, I'd go

Dr. Robert Purchase performed my total hip replacement surgery on August 26, 2015 at the Pacific Heights campus of CPMC. The initial x-rays of my hip joint scared me as there was nothing left to the joint and there were no alternatives to total hip replacement. I set the date with Dr. Purchase’s Surgery Scheduling Coordinator, Jessica, and I dreaded the operation more than anything I’ve ever dreaded in my entire life. The sun actually rose on August 26; I arrived at the hospital on time and was admitted. By then, all I wanted was whatever drug they give you to make all the surreal pre-op preparations

I had a shoulder replacement done 5/13 by another shoulder replacement surgeon. That operation was not a success. I had major pain in my shoulder for months. The surgeon simply stated that I had to give it time. After 17 months of rehab therapy and serious ongoing pain it was apparent that time wasn't going to solve the problem. I then went to three shoulder specialists. All three determined that the implant in the humerus was 1 cm too long. Two of them felt that the only solution was a shoulder revision surgery which involved taking out the implant and inserting a new one. Dr. Purchase agreed

It has been about six weeks since my allograft ACL reconstruction and I am thrilled with the outcome/progress so far. My knee feels stable again even though I have a bit more healing to do and I have been off of the pain meds for several weeks as well. I have friends who have had ACL reconstruction surgery in the past and they are surprised at how quickly I have progressed. I can only attribute this to the less invasive arthroscopic procedure Dr. Purchase recommended and performed.
Dr. Purchase is very personable and described the procedure and my options before the surgery very well. He and his

I have been seeing Dr. Purchase and his staff since November, 2013. After a thorough exam, x-rays and a "to be sure" MRI, Dr. Purchase determined I had a torn rotator cuff. Surgery was necessary, and the procedure and recovery issues were clearly outlined. I opted to have surgery as soon as possible. All went well. Post-op visit I got to see color photos of surgery, all thoroughly explained. Dr. Purchase and his staff have always been professional, friendly and available for questions or concerns. The office is calm, not harried. They are timely, which is a big plus and much appreciated. I am healing

Excellent Orthopedic Surgeon with great communication skills. Dr. Purchase is a great doctor who takes the time to really evaluate your situation and walk you through all the benefits and risks before recommending any initial medical diagnosis. I really appreciate the fact that Dr. Purchase is very personable and he is truly there to act as an advisor and have your best interest at heart. He will guide you through all the pre & post-surgery steps so that there are no hidden surprises - for my shoulder surgery, everything went just as planned on the actual surgery day and I was pleased at the level
