As research is an important aspect of improving medical care, Dr. Mast founded Hipster Inc. in 2017, a 501(c)3 Public Charitable Foundation with a goal of providing direct patient care, and supporting advancement of hip surgery through research and education. This foundation has helped numerous patients address their hip problems irrespective of their ability to pay.
Arthroscopy is an procedure that is now being used for the treatment of hip disorders. At this point it has limited applications. But where indicated, this procedure can provide a minimally invasive alternative to open surgeries. The basic concept of arthroscopy involves, through a series of puncture wound incisions, the insertion of a variety of instruments to repair the joint.

The past 3yrs since my surgery I've been able to accomplish 2 back to back triathlons (I know kinda crazy) complete my 2nd century ride, and countless 1/2 marathons, and 10ks. I truly had a fear I would never walk again after my surgery. Although I have pain fr time to time nothing compares to what I felt prior.

Dr Mast and his team are the BEST. After meeting with several surgeons I opted to have Dr Mast do my hip replacement and it was the best decision I could have made. I felt totally supported throughout the entire process – from initial consult to post surgery follow up. He and his team patiently answered ALL my questions so I knew exactly what to… expect. I received incredible care at the surgery center and went home the same day. Since then, my recovery has been incredibly easy and pain free – I was walking unassisted within a week and back to almost all my activities within

TL:DR If you need hip surgery - Dr Mast is your guy
When I figured out the only fix for my problematic hip was surgery - I was completely terrified. My way of dealing with the fear is to be as well informed as possible, so I set about doing a LOT of research.
First I figured out that I wanted my replacement done via the anterior approach - it was a no-brainer for me selecting an option that does not cut some of the strongest muscles in my body. Then I went about finding my surgeon. I compiled my shortlist and met with them- and Dr Mast stood out from all of them.
First of all he clearly has

I walked into surgery with Dr. Mast four years ago a healthy happy person with a hip that one day would need surgery and some occasional pain in that hip. I walked out of the hospital a cripple. From the moment I woke up from the surgery, I have not had one pain free moment.
I know now this will not change, and I will be experiencing this pain for the rest of my life. I will never be able to bike ride again, or do any of the myriad physical activities I used to enjoy.
My podiatrist told me that the operated leg is an inch longer than my other leg, and this has now begun to create difficulties

At age 58, I returned to Dr. Mast three weeks ago to have my second hip done (you can see my first review dated 5/6/2016). I had osteoarthritis on both sides, and the right side had progressed to the point that I just wanted it fixed. Dr. Mast and team did not disappoint. This time, I had out-patient surgery (yes, during Covid--no problem), and was home for dinner. Dr. Mast had moved to different facilities since my first surgery, but his team, including P.A., Dr. Kari Vanocker, were still in tact 4+ years later--good sign.
As it was for my left hip, the recovery for my right hip has been remarkably

48 hours ago, I had a total replacement of my left hip. Dr Mast did an incredible job. I am totally off pain meds and walking about freely. Really amazing, great surgeon with a great staff. Procedure was done at Novato Community Hospital, a Sutter facility. Hospital staff could not have been more helpful, nursing staff absolutely top notch. So thankful to have had this experience.

Dr. Mast is does not care about his patients and is indifferent to their suffering. Imagine being in the worst pain you have ever been in and your doctor could care less and won't give you pain medicine. The pain from my hip was so bad that I took my gun out of the nightstand and put it in my mouth and almost pulled the trigger. I complained about… how much pain I was in and Dr. Mast becomes red-faced and incredulous, and blew me off. Sure, he was nice at first, but then it was almost like he became a different person. There are a lot of hip surgeons that are rated higher and with much better

Everything about Dr. Mast's practice is wholly grounded in excellence and compassion. I'm so grateful that he was my doctor for my anterior hip replacement. First rate experience for the very first appointment through to post operative care. Rarely have I experienced health care at this level, inclusive of every single team member in his office.

I was referred to Dr. Mast by y orthopedic surgeon in August regarding a torn ligament in my right hip. Dr. Mast suggested that we try physical therapy before moving to surgery, and boy was he right. The physical therapy resolved my problem, and I want to thank Dr. Mast for his wise guidance and for not being eager to do surgery. He is the kind of physician we all want to see, as he is truly special. I view him and his approach to medicine with the highest regard. Thank you. Hal Crow

Such and incredible experience. I went to Dr Mast for some hip pain and never did he pressure me into a replacement. We worked on a variety of different methods to help reduce pain and I'm making a fantastic recovery. After talking to several of his former patients, this seems to be a recurring theme! If you're suffering from hip pain, you HAVE to give them a call.

THANK YOU, DR. MAST!
Surgery on 4/5/17...Without a doubt, the best hip surgeon you could ever find. Had anterior approach hip replacement on my right hip and was up and walking the first day with a walker which continued for about a week, followed by a cane for the following two weeks. 3 weeks post op, no medical devices were needed. Just amazing how fast my recovery was with minimal pain.
Had another hip replacement on my left hip on 9/20/17 by a different surgeon in Arizona, due to location convenience and I am still having pain issues and a very slow recovery.
My advice, do not hesitate to

As an older overweight woman who was still working on her feet 8 hours a day through some incredible pain, I was blessed to be able to go out of my area of coverage with my insurance plan to have an AAA Left hip replacement. Pain meds were taken only to keep me quieter and off my feet more since I was experiencing edema by being up too much. I… was told I could get off crutches if I could weight-bear equally. That was within two weeks. I haven't looked back. No pain, full recovery and back to work full time within weeks. today, 3 years later, I am at the gym 4-5 times a week without any

After dealing with progressive hip pain for the last 7 years with the last 2 of those being severe pain, I decided to take the plunge and have bilateral total hip replacement. I had these bionic hips installed on Wednesday by an artist of an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Nick Mast. Dr. Mast and his gifted team did an incredible job with both hips… and I'm already up and walking 24-hours after surgery (3/9/16). I can't say enough how talented, professional, and committed he and his team are at St. Francis Medical hospital in San Francisco. The surgery could not have gone any better and was

One week post op. I hurt myself in a motorcycle wreck 25 yrs ago. It was time to repair the hip, not urgent but the right time. I wanted to have it done the anterior approach. I heard about Dr Mast, and when I found out that he trained under the Dr(Joel Matta)who invented the HANA table, the table that makes the anterior approach so much easier, I signed up. This was the first time in my 62 yrs that I have been overnight in a hospital, and I can't say enough good about the WHOLE PROCESS. THANKS Nicholas
