It's on the mats where Karen and Adam first met back in 2011. Through the sport their relationship began and developed, leading to the start of marriage and family, now with two kids! Since the beginning of their relationship they both knew that they wanted to share their love of Jiu Jitsu with others who wanted to not only get in shape, but were looking for something bigger than themselves.
At North South Jiu Jitsu we offer an ego-free training environment where people from all walks of life are welcome. You don't need any prior martial arts or sports experience to join a class. We offer a place where you can be part of something more than just jiu jitsu, a place that fosters long lasting relationships, on and of the mats.

Services
You are able to take the classes at your own pace, you're never forced to participate in any part of class that you aren't comfortable with. Sparring is encouraged, but always optional and up to the individual. The instructors in class make an effort to know every student and will always answer any questions that they may have.
This class is focused on the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from stand-up to ground work. It is 45 min long, beginning with a warm up, then positional drills that focus on one or two techniques for the week, finishing with positional sparring and a round of live training. This class is great for all levels of students, whether you are just starting out, or are experienced and want to sharpen your technique.
When I started training jiu jitsu with Karen and Adam at NorthSouth, I had goals of getting in better shape and learning self defense. Although I achieved both (I lost over 20 pounds and can hold my own against bigger and stronger opponents), I never anticipated gaining a second family in the process.

I'm someone who is not inherently athletic, who never participated in any competitive sports, and who gets bored going to the gym to run in place and lift things up/put them down. Even when I tried to commit to a typical gym over the years, my motivation never lasted more than a few months. So if I could go back in time a year-and-a-half and tell past-Josh that today I would be down 20 pounds with tons more energy and stamina, progressing in a new skill, and committed to working out 5+ times a week, he would be shocked. But here I am, coming up on 35 years old and in the best shape of my life,

I started Jiu Jitsu when I turned 40 at Mrkulic BJJ in Montclair, the same place where Professor Adam started. It was and still is without question the hardest, humbling, and most rewarding physical activity I had ever done. Now at 48, I have had the luxury of training at a few other academies locally as well as across the country which has all contributed to my Jiu Jitsu journey. Now I have found my home at North South for the following reasons, the credentials and ability of the Professors, the quality and cleanliness of the environment, and overall vibe which is strongly dictated by the students

Instructors are welcoming and knowledgeable. Owners - who are also instructors - are accessible and encouraging. Students are respectful and friendly. Good variety of colored belts, skill levels, and competitors/hobbyists. Numerous killers. Tailored advice given during drilling. Instructors practice and roll with students. Owners work to improve the space and encourage students' interests. Multiple classes offered most days. Focus is personal growth and improving technical skill. Environment is relaxed. Many students have trained here for several years.

I began my journey at NorthSouth as a complete beginner. From day one, everyone was extraordinarily welcoming and friendly. I immediately fell in love with the positive environment at the gym. All of the instructors are so helpful and encouraging. Joining North South has not only improved my physical health, but has had a tremendous impact on my mental health as well. I am so grateful for everyone at NorthSouth!

I'm new to the sport. In fact I've only trained twice. As soon as I opened the door to North South I was welcomed not only by the owner, but all the members in the room. Having gone only attended twice I can tell you that from white belt to black belt everyone in that studio is there not only to get better, but to form friendships and community. So far the sequence of a course has been as follows. Warm up, movement, drill and skill, sweep- submit-pass, and roll. Again, I've only attended twice so that layout may change, but it was certainly what I was looking for. That and an unpretentious community

I was a visitor. I usually train at another academy. My friend trains here and I came to check out North South Jiu Jitsu on his invitation.
I had a very good first impression. It was a welcoming atmosphere, members were very friendly, instructors were very attentive, and offered great supervision and instruction. Positively recommend this academy.

The best BJJ around. North South is a family business run by a couple who are both black belts (how cool is that?). The instruction is top notch, and they really go out of their way to make everyone feel at home. This is reflected in the students as well who are also very friendly. North South offers a great mix of students as well from all ages, genders, backgrounds and skill levels. You should definitely check it out if you are in the area, it blows most of the gyms around here out of the water.

I had a blast at North South Jiu Jitsu last week. This was the first time I had ever trained and I couldn't have picked a better spot. Although I have a wrestling background, I didn't really know what to do and Adam Peterson gave me excellent instruction and the confidence to roll with the other experienced grapplers. All in all, a great place to train and look forward to going back!

North South is a very welcoming, clean and organized Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school. On display throughout the school walls are Adam Peterson's many, many earned medals at high level competitions which lets you know you're getting quality instruction. Adam who is the owner and instructor greets you and makes you feel at home right away. I would recommend this school for any beginner or veteran who is looking to train and compete or just stay in shape.

I can honestly say as someone who has trained at a handful of schools in the past that I have had the best experiences training at North South BJJ. Adam and Karen are two incredibly talented and humble professors of their art. Completely ego free environment with amazing people! I would recommend to anyone considering getting into BJJ to come try their free trial class before even looking into any other schools. You will not be disappointed! OSS!!!
