He should know. Hoss is co-owner of A.W. Hoss & Son, a North Seattle custom-furniture and upholstery business that was started in 1936 by his grandfather, Amos W. Hoss. Like the metalsmiths at Black Dog Forge, Hoss does not, in fact, make "Bill Gates money, " but there is something to be said for keeping a family business in operation, and largely successful, for three-quarters of a century.

I cannot say enough good things about these guys! I took in an old bench that I was learning to play the piano on and needed it to be re-upholstered asap. Rich took me back into the shop and found the EXACT material/color I had conjured up in my mind.. literally within minutes! He then told me it would take close to a week to be completed. No joke, the NEXT day I received a text saying my job was completed!! He said I was so excited when I came in and he wanted to make sure I could still practice the piano without much delay that he got it done straight away. I grew up in the area and have been

We had a project we did for a dental office and needed to do it quickly and within a certain budget. One of the owners, Rich, worked with us to get the look we wanted at the right price. In addition, they picked up and delivered and turned the entire project in 10 days, which included a holiday weekend.
It was such a good experience, I'm now roaming the house looking for other projects. I hope to do more work with them in the future-the possibilities are endless.

My two major complaints with A.W. Hoss and Son are quality control and keeping any sort of schedule.
If you want to have a real interesting conversation. Ask Ms. Susanne Hoss to back her claim that African Americans are less intelligent than other races because of the slave trade. She backs it because she worked with poor black people, and "science".
Yeah Susie is the Hoss that basically runs A.W. Hoss and son. So any money to this company is towards rascism.

Broken promises all way around: woodwork was not refurbished as promised, completion timeline broken numerous times (was promised 6 weeks initially for a small chair, several calls & visits later. Took 4+ months to complete upholstery work (nicely done). However, chair has exposed woodwork that frames the back & arms down to seat with cabriolet legs. None of the woodwork was refurbished/refinished as promised. Customer service with communication to client needs vast improvement!

I had a bad experience and probably wouldn't have been prompted to write this review had they not ignored me after they did some poor work that needed to be fixed -- and never did it. Here is what happened:
Needed 4 kitchen stools re-upholstered and was given a quote that seemed high. I went to another company and got the same leather hide I was quoted for 1/3 the cost, so brought the leather in myself so AW Hoss could just do the re-upholstery work. They had already told me $X price just for labor per stool, so I was fine with that.
Went to pick up the completed stools, and after inspecting

I recently took a bunch of my mid-century furniture projects here to get reupholstered. I had several things that were in various phases of disassembled (because I'm much better at taking things apart than putting them back together) but Rich didn't even flinch when I walked in with all my pieces. He was super easy to work with, priced a quote out for me right there while I waited and finished the job on time for a really fair price. I needed a pretty quick turn around time for a family gathering I was planning and he even kept me updated throughout the process. My furniture looks amazing

Some of the stitching was coming out of one of my couch cushions revealing some tasty fluff stuffing that my dog couldn't resist. I took it by AW Hoss and they had me fixed up by the next day for a totally reasonable price. They were even willing to do it while I waited but I chose to pick it up the following day. I've got a bunch of kitchen chairs that need re-covering and they were super helpful discussing approximate costs and coverings. So when I'm ready to do those, these guys will get my business.

Just dropped off six couch cushions to be recovered. Great experience. Shop is obviously very busy but the owner took time to listen to what I wanted and figured out what would work, understood that it wasn't a fancy formal thing but the couch that we have in our kitchen. So, blackberry pie, red wine, cat hair and lots and lots of people hanging out while we cook- we have a living room but I sometimes wonder why.. And the cushions needed to match the other parts of the couch. Bingo, he found the perfect thing: tough yet comfortable and at a great price. Loved it. And, if you do have that amazing

Very helpful staff! Bought a bunch of supplies for my own reupholstery projects at very reasonable prices. Professional quality items at cheaper prices than joanns etc. Big selection of fabric books for ordering, and some rolls of extra fabric at discount prices as well. Staff talked to me about my projects and gave me great advice without being pretentious like some other places. Also saw some of their finished pieces and they looked great!

Update:
Apparently summer vacation, missed communication and some potential management changes was the culprit for the poor response time. After meeting with staff, we arranged to have the work done. It was done very well, the wood was cleaned and freshened up, the cushions restuffed and fabric replaced as promised. The delivery time was a little over 2-weeks - very acceptable.
Was referred by neighbor for reupholstering a few chairs. Called a few times and staff was confused and not responsive. Google said Saturday hours till 2pm, sign on door said 1pm, arrived at 12:50 and no answer.

Eight months ago I gave Larry Hoss of Hoss & Sons my french antique caned chair to have it re-caned. I have called, texted, phoned both Larry's cell and the shop no less than ten times over the last six months, and I have gotten no response. I spoke at length to Alan Hoss, who I believe owns the business, and he had no explanation, no apology, and even bettert he was cranky and peevish in his response. He assured me three months ago that Larry would call me, and yet no contact. My next step will be to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and if that fails to get a response

Hoss and Son is as good as it gets! I've givin these guys some pretty challenging projects and they always rise to the occasion. The last project they did for me was building and upholstering all my booth seating at my new restaurant Citrus on South Lake Union. The quality was awesome and the crew is always smiling. I was in their showroom for about an hour and a half looking through tons of samples, which I liked, but was totally ignored. It seems that the phone calls from mom, friends, and everyone else were more important than helping a potential client. After I was finally noticed,and apologized to, I checked out the samples I needed.

This is the very best place to have furniture upholstered in Seattle. The workmanship, customer service and prices are excellent. I am so pleased with the work they have done for me. Mr. Al Hoss is a treasure and a tremendous resource. This company is better than excellent - and that's the truth!
Also, the fabric selection is amazing. There is something for every budget here.
