The Shamrock House was Founded in 1938 by Patrick Kellegher. In 1937 Patrick visited his sister, Mary, who along with her husband George Sullivan, had just purchased the Erin's Melody Hotel in East Durham. At that time, Patrick was employed by the Long Island Railroad and had a partnership in a bar named The Three Musketeers.
That bar was located on Cyprus Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y. During that visit, on a ride along main street in East Durham, he noticed that a building called the Central Hotel, was for sale. He was so taken with the beauty of the area and its likeness to his native County Longford that he purchased the Central in 1938.

A fabulous place to stay. Clean, friendly and most accommodating. Treat you like family! Homemade delicious food! Service and personal care bar none. They opened up there hearts and door in our time of need. They made special arrangements for us at a truly difficult time. Came from out of state to have local funeral and put us up in a clean, comfortable room and hosted a wonderful Repast luncheon. They went above and beyond. Forever grateful!

Disappointing Mother's day experience. We had four people at our table, the place was busy, but not terribly busy. We arrived early and were seated quickly. We ordered food which arrived in decent time. Refills were slow to come, the staff seemed distracted/unfriendly. After requesting the check it took an additional 10 minutes to get the check and have our payment processed. The atmosphere was very loud, we asked the music to be turned down so we could hear each other and enjoy our meals without grimacing. I can not recommend this restaurant.

I stopped by here for breakfast one Saturday morning and was disappointed in lack of my personal preference. They had a buffet-style breakfast for ~$10 and the selection was limited:
Toaster with some white bread by it (and probably some condiments that I didn't take note of)
Some yogurts (which contained aspartame)
Cereal Bars (which had high fructose corn syrup)
Scrambled Eggs
Potatoes (maybe that's home fries)
French Toast
Bacon and some Meat patty
Pot of (I believe) oatmeal
Considering I'm not an egg person or try to avoid certain ingredients in my food, I only had some french

This town is a haven of everything Irish! John, the owner, is so nice and so accommodating. My husband and I are staying here for the first time and feel we made the best choice here in East Durham (having stayed at Gavin's the last time). This is a homey but rustic experience. If you need chain hotel amenities don't stay. But if you want to step back in time with some really nice people in a bucolic setting, book a visit!

I've been coming here since I was a tiny tot, so I can't speak to the rooms, since I'm a local. I can say that the bar is usually pretty packed, the food is tasty and large portions, and that I wish they would update the restrooms! I can really only speak to the ladies room here, but that's my number one thought EVERY time I'm here. It changed ownership relatively recently, and I think they're doing a great job keeping this East Durham staple relevant.
