Founded in 1923, our funeral home has been in business for over 90 years. The current generation of the James family represents the third generation to own and operate Hallowell & James as a family operated funeral home. Family owned and operated was once the norm in the funeral home industry. Today, having a family member deeply involved in arrangements from beginning to end is not a promise many other funeral homes can keep.
The Hallowell & James legacy ensures our strong family commitment to your family. Our family takes its responsibility to our communities very seriously. We consistently make changes to help families be more comfortable and to adapt to their changing needs. One thing that hasn't changed is that when you call us it is very likely you'll reach a member of our family or a full time professional funeral director who is a valued member of our staff.

Services
Hallowell & James Funeral Homes have been serving families in Chicago and the suburbs for over 90 years. Founded in 1923, the firm was started by a partnership between Harry D. James, Jr. and Floyd Hallowell, who operated their funeral service business alongside a furniture store in downtown LaGrange.
Hallowell & James provides personalized services to every family we serve based upon the desires expressed to us. The following are examples of services we provide. A personalized Memorial Service with floral tributes, photographs and personal mementos can be held in our funeral home chapel or a location of your choosing.
Pre-planning funeral arrangements has become a more common decision for many people. In some cases, financial planners have begun to include pre-planning as part of a sound retirement strategy for their clients.
The most important reasons to consider pre-planning however are to ensure that your wishes are well known to your family, and to make things a little easier when your family is responsible for making very important decisions on your behalf. It's a relatively simple process to pre-arrange.

Hallowell & James provides dignified cremation options for families. Many service and memorial options that conclude with cremation are available. There are two methods of cremation from which to choose. In addition to traditional flame cremation, hydrolysis, a water based method is also available in Illinois.

I was nervous at first because there were only 2 ratings, but they did everything perfect. Mom was beautiful! They took care of every detail we asked for. Other homes told us no special requests! Dave made us feel that he could manage any special request. The funeral home is spacious and clean. I am so happy we chose them for mom. Thank you Dave!

Dave is the most patient, professional and yet personal end of life planner I could ever have asked for. Dave was tender and supportive while being budget appropriate and respectful of religious and cultural choices. Both from an emergent unplanned experience as well as a pre planned process, I could not ask for a more genuinely tender and all around perfect experience for end of life closure and passage for my loved ones. I highly recommend this team and their services.
